Hyper to hypo? Advice please

Hi I am newly registered. I have hyperthyroidism diagnosed 2011 and I take 5mg Carbimazole. I have had a lot of high TSH results in the past and because my latest result shows a high TSH and low FT4 I am starting to wonder if I have been diagnosed correctly? Previous result was

TSH 0.02 (0.2 - 4.2)

Free T4 22.7 (12 - 22)

Free T3 4.3 (3.1 - 6.8)

Latest result is

TSH 7.01 (0.2 - 4.2)

Free T4 13.8 (12 - 22)

Free T3 3.7 (3.1 - 6.8)

Symptoms are dark circles under eyes, constipation, dry skin, swollen and irritated feeling in neck, weight gain, heavy and long periods, tiredness, puffy eyes, feeling cold.

Thanks

Chelsey8,

Have you always taken 5mg Carbimazole or was dose higher when you were diagnosed in 2011?

TSH was suppressed in 2011 and FT4 was mildly over range but FT3 was within range. I think it was premature to diagnose hyperthyroidism with those results.

You are overmedicated on 5mg as TSH 7.01 is hypothyroid and FT4 and FT3 are low in range. I would certainly reduce dose to 2.5mg while you discuss with your endo weaning off Carbimazole.

Thanks for reply yes always been taking 5mg carbimazole. New results say TSH 33 (0.2 - 4.2) free T4 10.6 (12 - 22)

Chelsey8,

You need to stop taking Carbimazole. You are now profoundly hypothyroid with TSH so high and FT4 below range.

Were you referred to endocrinology for management or has your GP been mismanaging you?

Thanks GP told me I was hyperthyroid with TSH 6.2 (0.2 - 4.2) and free T4 14.7 (12 - 22) and TPO antibodies 880.5 (<34) and that was when I was started on Carbimazole

Your GP is exceptionally ignorant! A TSH of 6.2 is hypothyroid, and the antibodies mean that you have Hashi's. Having Hashi's means that your thyroid is slowly being destroyed and you will become more and more hypo.

Your doctor should have put you on levo, not carbimazole. I think you have grounds to sue him, there, for mistreatment and total inadequacy. He should be struck off and not allowed to practice anymore!

Well you weren't. You had Autoimmune thyroiditis and were HYPO (shown by over range TSH, low normal free T4 and high TPO antibodies). Find a new GP before that one kills you!
