Newbie looking for help

Hi

I'm a newbie & looking for some advice. Around 6 yrs ago I had the sensation of food/something getting stuck in my throat. Wasn't until a year ago that I was sent for a barium swallow test and a oesophageal exam which showed gastro reflux and I was given Lansoprazole which hasn't done very much.

Over the years other symptoms have developed & progressively gotten worse. My symptoms are numbness in arms, fingers & feet, carpal tunnel in fingers, dry skin/hair, aching legs and constipation.

I've been told my TSH level is below 10 but earlier this year my vitamin D was 14. I was prescribed strong dose of D3 and it then rose to 45.3 and then I was advised to just take 800iu D3. My Anti TPO has come back at 557.1 IU/mL.

GP says it is Gravea Disease. Any advice appreciated.

Can you see a different GP

You almost certainly have Hashimoto's or autoimmune thyroid disease

Your antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease). About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's

With Hashimoto's, our gut can be badly affected. Low stomach acid can lead to poor absorption of vitamins. Low vitamin levels stop thyroid hormones working.

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. Always get actual results and ranges. Post results when you have them, members can advise

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. If not private tests are available

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

Low stomach acid can be an issue (rather than high stomach acid)

Lots of posts on here about how to improve with Apple cider vinegar or Betaine HCL

But you can not just stop Lansoprazole. If you decide you want to do this it has to be done incredibly slowly and carefully

You're entitled to copies of your own blood test results

Get hold of them and put on a new post. Members can advise. TSH should be near one, not ten
