Interstitial Cystitis/Low Thyroid Link?

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos this year at age 61 with several months of issues including leg spasms, hot flashes, brittle hair, fatigue and memory confusion. TSH of 40 to 49 after TSH tests even though thyroid test three months earlier had a TSH of 1.8. Nodules on thyroid. One year ago I was diagnosed with painful Interstitial cystitis. (Elmiron works well for me for the interstitial cystitis). Some mild antibody issues related to gamma goblin levels showed up in my blood work a year before the Hashimotos was diagnosed . I also have ocular myasthenia gravis and asthma which are both autoimmune conditions. I hope some urologist or endocrinologist will explore the possibility a possible thyroid/ interstitial cystitis link. I took potassium citrate to help lower uric acid for a couple of months. The thyroid is still bouncing and my energy levels come and go on a daily basis and am still having ultrasounds for nodules for cancer risk.

Both Hashimoto's and Interstitial Cystitis (IC) are systemic auto-immune conditions.

If Hashimoto's is an enigma for many endocrinologists, IC may represent even a double mystery.

According to Dr O'Bryan, there are 159 diseases that are on the autoimmune spectrum of which is Hashimoto's and IC.

Have you considered being gluten free ? It could help reduce inflammation in the gut and in turn the bladder. It can also reduce thyroid anti-bodies ... 😊

MountainMel,

There is a connection with low thyroid and interstitial cystis. One you are optimally dosed on Levothyroxine you may find IC gets better. See posts on IC healthunlocked.com/search/i...

Thanks for your responses. I suspected there is a link between IC and Hashimotos. My uric acid levels get high when the IC is acting up and I take potassium citrate and Elmiron to combat that problem. The IC is better now that I am on Levothyroxine; but I have also become more careful about what I eat. At one point I could barely walk before the diagnosis of Hashimotos and quit driving because of mental forgetfulness so I am much better now than a few months ago but still not back to full strength. I also have ocular myasthenia gravis and asthma which are autoimmune based diseases. My body seems to jump from one autoimmune problem to another. Wish they could figure out some way to stop the body from attacking itself.
