Levothyroxine Dosage

Hi,

Just advice really, I’m under care of endocrine now for my hypothyroidism…Hashimotos also.

Struggling with my weight, and hypothyroid symptoms still - feeling cold, hair loss, dry skin.

My thyroxine has been increased to 325mcg daily after a bout of being overmedicated (?) in 2021 where the dose of my thyroxine at the time (200mcg) was reduced by half. TSH Level was 0.01 at the time. This was a year after pregancy and ceasing 14months of breastfeeding. Could other hormones have been at play?

I eventually paid privately for a thyroid scan which showed atrophy and nil nodules (my aunt had thyroid cancer at 21years)

My levels were being checked every 3 months for the past year or so, everytime abnormal, leading me to now be on my current dose of 325mcg.

Is there anything else I should be asking for or anything else that could maybe help? I feel 325mcg is quite a high dose to be on and still feel the way I do.

Thanks in advance

Please could you post the results of your blood tests, including the lab ranges. Also please could you explain how the tests were done - eg fist thing in the morning, before food or levothyroxine etc.

I don’t have them to hand.

Usually before food and post Levo

Probably worth getting full set of tests done ( free t4, free t3, anyibodies) then as you will have seen mentioned many times on the posts on this group. As SlowDragon says look at vitamin levels too.

Do it all fasting, before meds, first thing in the morning and then you should be able to work out what to do from there

Looking at previous posts presumably you have autoimmune thyroid disease, probably Ord’s

what vitamin supplements are you taking

When were vitamin levels last tested

Please add most recent thyroid and vitamin results and ranges

Previous post with details of private testing

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis. Thyroid shrinks and shrivels up

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

ESSENTIAL to test vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin

Many (most?) hashimoto’s patients have very low vitamin levels unless supplement

Test before starting any vitamin supplements

Test privately if GP or endocrinologist are reluctant

My sympathy that with your dose you still don't feel your Optimal. It sounds like you might have absorption issues. You might want to try dosing bedtime and take your T4 with some vitamin C. See if that helps you. In addition did you have your other very Valuable vitamins tested? Vitamin D, B-12/ Folate, Iron/Ferritin. I found over the years that these vitamins were/are Crucial for our thyroid hormones to work Well for us.Best Wishes.
