NHS will now only do TSH tests according to Doctor

My doctor insists my blood tests on the TSH are normal. I pointed out that the TSH test isnt adequate test for Hashimotos and that I needed to have antibody testing. I was told that the NHS refuse to do them that they wont even trst t3 and t4 that they only provide TSH tests. When I pointed out that my level B asopagus damage could be as a result of the Hashimotos I was told the hospital is so over stretched that there are people sicker than me who can't get an appointment so there was no way she would refer me to entiology.

I suffer from M.E. fibromyalgia, Hashimotos silent reflux and gourd spend much time in bed and am wheelchair bound. It seems that NHS patients are not getting the care and support they need.

I knew they mainly did TSH and T4. Now, yours is saying that TSH only will be done. I have never heard anything so ridiculous.

The fact that you have all of the 'other' diseases which (I am not medically qualified) I have read could be due to you being Thyroid Hormone Resistant. This means that you cannot convert T4 into T3 and that's what it is supposed to do so need T3 alone. I know they have also stopped this. They know nothing about anything to do with clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism nor how to heal the patient. T3 is needed in your T3 receptor cells to relieve your clinical symptoms.

The TSH is only good for one thing - for diagnosing a patient. Thereafter they should forget all about the TSH and concentrate on the actual thyroid hormones, i.e. T4 and T3. The TSH is from the pituitary gland not the thyroid gland.

Our bodies are lacking in providing sufficient thyroid hormones, so they have to be replaced and Research shows quite clearly that combination of T4/T3 is suitable for many patients. I do know however that the Authorities in their 'wisdom' have decided to remove T3 from prescribing due to the cost although there are other cheaper ones available. That was a wonderful opportunity for them to, finally, stop T3 prescribing.

You have an Autoimmune Thyroid Disease - also called Hashimoto's and it is the antibodies it produces that attack your gland until you are hypothyroid but in the meantime you should have been prescribed levothyroxine to 'nip things in the bud' as an ex President of the BTA suggests.

This doctor treats a sick patient like some doctors in the past treated vulnerable people without that tiny little bit of compassion instead of doing her/his utmost to relieve these clinical symptoms she tells you you are better off than other sick people. Is she yet another who should have their gland removed and then be given no replacement hormones?

Can you go to another doctor? Also tell her if you were adequately medicated she may not need you to go to the surgery only to be turned away as you are wasting your time more than she is wasting hers. She gets paid for sitting in a chair and denying people help/understanding.

Smithfishe,

If you have already had thyroid antibodies tested and had a positive result for Hashimoto's there is no reason to repeat the antibody test. I don't agree that TSH only is an adequate measure of thyroid hormones and think FT4 should also be tested. If your GP practice has an agreement with the lab to only test TSH I'm afraid you will have to order a private thyroid test to check FT4 and FT3 in addition to TSH. thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin... Medichecks offer #ThyroidThursday discounts.

My TSh have always shown normal but when they operated to remove a cyst on my neck they discovered clinical evidence of Hashimotos and had to remove half my thyroid stating there was also evidence of hashimotos on the remaining half. Yet because my TSH results are always normal they say there is nothing they can do. They continue to blame all my symptoms on M.E and Fibro and refuse to help me

Smithfishe,

What is your recent thyroid result?

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

As you can not get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP, like many you will have to get these privately

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

With Hashimoto's, until it's under control, our gut can be badly affected.

Low stomach acid can lead to poor absorption of vitamins. Low vitamin levels stop thyroid hormones working.

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies.
