B12 409 Folate 18.2

Just wondered if these looked ok-apparently B12 in 'middle' range-any ideas on how much to supplement with?

Any comments appreciated including specific type of B12.

Many Thanks

celticlady It's on the low side. An extract from the book, "Could it be B12?" by Sally M. Pacholok:

"We believe that the 'normal' serum B12 threshold needs to be raised from 200 pg/ml to at least 450 pg/ml because deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebrospinal fluid below 550".

"For brain and nervous system health and prevention of disease in older adults, serum B12 levels should be maintained near or above 1000 pg/ml."

I keep my level at around 1000. Sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges 1000mcg are what's needed if you wish to self supplement, along with a good quality B Complex to balance all the B vitamins (eg Thorne Basic B).

Thanks Susie will take the 500mg ones -are the ordinary tablets no good at all?

Has to be sub lingual?

Sublingual is better absorbed due to them bypassing the stomach and being absorbed through the tiny blood vessels under the tongue. Particularly important for people who have absorption problems and anyone with Hashi's (Hashi's and absorption problems tend to go hand in hand).

B12 comes in mcg (micrograms) not mg (milligrams). To raise your level I would go for 1000mcg, you could drop down to 500mcg as maintenance a few months down the line.
