Thyroid results

Hi I am new here are thyroid results with me on 100mcg levothyroxine. Had it increased to 175mcg a week ago. I'm not worried about overshooting my levels, I don't think that's going to happen because I was taking 175mcg 2 years ago and level of free T3 was at bottom of range and free T4 at top of range.

Symptoms are sluggish bowels, tiredness, puffy eyes, periods coming later, breathlessness, muscle aches and weakness, weight gain, recurring bladder infections, dry skin.

Diagnosed 2013.

Thanks in advance.

Results on 100mcg levothyroxine

TSH 6.9 (0.2 - 4.2)

Free T4 13.7 (12 - 22)

Free T3 4.0 (3.1 - 6.8)

That's too much of an increase in one go! Increases should be 25 mcg every six weeks. I'm not worried that you're going to go over the top of the range, my worry would be that you stress out your body and make yourself ill with that sudden huge increase. How are you feeling at the moment? If you don't feel good, reduce your dose.

Thanks I still have the same hypothyroid symptoms as before. Not sure I have over medicated ones yet.

Well, you wouldn't, after only week. I wasn't talking about over-medicating, as I said. I was talking about stressing the body but taking too large an increase in one go. Not the same thing at all.

So as in adrenals? I also have antibodies, this is Hashimotos?

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies 380 (<34)

Thyroglobulin antibodies 459.3 (<115)

Sorry for questions!

Not necessarily adrenals, but could be. Levo just shouldn't be increased like that.

Yes, you do have Hashi's. :)

The endo was responsible for increase. Probably doesn't know what he's doing then. Thanks

None of them do. They are diabetes specialists who think thyroid is 'easy'! They mess people up something rotten!

My endo (at the time) didn't know what she was doing either by increasing my dose by just 50mcg. My body went from being slow and cold to having tremors, palpitations and hot flashes to the extent I was ready to jump out of the moving car while my sister was taking me to the doctor.

Oh dear! That sounds bad!

I believe I had Hashi flare up on top of it, looking back at my old results. Wish I had anybody back then to explain what was going on and not to be left to fend for myself.

I think that's something we all wish!

How long ago was dose dropped from 175 to 100mcg and who was responsible?

Was it cut in one go too? Dose should only ever be changed slowly, even worse dropping than increasing

Suggests endo is clueless

yes your antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known as autoimmune thyroid disease). About 90% of hypothyroidism in UK is due to Hashimoto's.

Hashimoto's affects the gut, leading to low stomach acid, malabsorption then causing low vitamin levels and leaky gut.

Low vitamins that affect thyroid are vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. When they are too low they stop Thyroid hormones working.

Have these been tested, if so post results and ranges

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms.

Dose dropped from 175mcg to 100mcg by GP and cut in one go.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toOlivia88

GP is either ignorant or negligent to do so.

If you had Hashi flare then a small temporary dose reduction was all that was required

But if under the care of endo, GP should not be interfering

What was blood test result that prompted such massive drop?

I think I had a Hashi flare.

TSH <0.02 (0.2 - 4.2)

Free T4 28.8 (12 - 22)

Free T3 6.9 (3.1 - 6.8)

But only very very slightly over range.

To cut by 75mcg was an over reaction

Hi Olivia, your case sounds very similar to mine in that my GP upped my Levo from 100 to 175 in one go. Exactly 8 weeks later I had an enormous panic attack at work and have not been back since. I was reduced to 150 immediately then 125 last week so I’m waiting to see what happens. I would hate the same thing to happen to you. X
