Tanya-B I have had a lifelong constipation problem. My ferritin level was very low and I couldn't even contemplate anything like ferrous fumarate. I bought some Solgar Gentle Iron - made my constipation worse. Bought some 5mg Ferritin - still made my constipation worse. Gave up with supplements and started eating lamb's liver once a week, ferritin raised from 35-91.

I do take Magnesium Citrate powder every night now and that helps keep me regular.

I am currently doing a little experiment. Someone recently mentioned Megafoods Blood Builder so I bought some, it's food based. I tablet contains 26mg iron. My normal meal of liver would be around 120-130g and that apparently gives around 10-12mg iron. I am going to take 1 Blood Builder tablet a week and perhaps have one meal of liver every 2 weeks. I have already taken 1 Blood Builder earlier this week. I took it with 1000mg Vit C. The Blood Builder tablet didn't appear to cause constipation within the first couple of days, I'm keeping my eye on it. I shall also do the occasional iron status test with Medichecks to keep an eye on my ferritin, it also measures transferrin, TIBC and iron, and costs £39 so I figure I can do that once or twice to see how my experiment is going over the months.

Thank you so much. There is a lot of information there and I shall try it. I never even thought about liver so I shall def try that.

Thanks again

I used to get Spatone liquid iron on prescription from my GP. It's much more gentle on the stomach and didn't give me any problems with constipation.

Having said that, when I asked for it recently on repeat prescription, the GP said, 'no, just eat more liver.' I'm not very enamoured with him right now as he told me he was referring me to an endo but then didn't. Pah!
