NHS Lab TSH & T4 range direct comparison with private lab possible?

I recently had private lab testing for thyroid hormones by MediChecks. Are MediChecks units of measurement and ranges directly comparable to those used by the NHS?

For reference MediChecks use the following units and ranges: -

TSH units are mIU/L and range 0.27 -> 4.20

Free Thyroxine (aka. T4) units are pmol/L and range of 12.0 -> 22.0

The frequently mentioned NHS target TSH value of 10 for diagnosing Hyperthyroidism. What is the unit of measurement?

The ranges vary according to the lab's equipment but you can compare by seeing where you fall within the range.

NICE guidelines say

"Diagnose overt hypothyroidism (OH) if TSH is greater than 10 mU/L and FT4 is below the reference range."

TSH seems to be the same universally. We aim for approximately 1.00. It doesn't matter whether it's pmol or ngdl because the range will then change and that's what you look at.

You want both FT3 and FT4 to be in upper ranges.

This website has information you can find but this one is about TSH.
