I am not a Doctor - but I can SEE you have a swollen thyroid/neck and the two tell-tale lines going around the neck that point to a thyroid problem. A Greek Doc I once heard of - immediately knew when someone had a thyroid problem due to the two necklace like wrinkles on the neck - they can be anywhere on the neck. Of course most Docs go by blood tests and that is it ....
I believe you have had a goitre diagnosed with NFA - I would return to your GP. Do you have test results with ranges to share with us ?
TSH is normal and within range, I've had a Ultrasound last year and they dismissed the enlarged thyroid as no nodules found.. the doctor/consultant said it was just fat and not enlarged..
It's clearly enlarged I'm waiting for referral back to ENT.. my doctors have dismissed thyroid problem as within range..
I'm so frustrated and angry with this lengthy process..
I have lost pubic hair, hot/cold flushes, exhausted, chronic exhaustion to be fair..
my glands are still swollen after 6+ weeks, painful and tight around my Goitre..
The only elevated blood was cholesterol 5.3
I know I need more bloods for thyroid to rule out autoimmune thyroditis which is what I suspect I have, just worried my GP will refuse bloods
No T3 or T4 done or extra for thyroid functions etc
I presented with fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands these have persisted 5+ weeks and previous history of enlarged thyroid leads me to believe I have thyroid problems x
My auntie used to have a huge one! Much bigger than yours. She went into hospital for something else and the surgeon had a fit. I don't know what they did but it subsided over a few months. Long time ago.
If getting private blood tests then choose to also test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin tests all these
DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw
All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting
Highly recommend private testing - 100's on here have had to resort to this
Some people seem to take medication to reduce the size of the thyroid. No doctor ever told me about it so I cannot advise about it.
My first goitre grew inwards and started to strangle me, but that does not yet seem to be happening to you. Apart from medication as mentioned above, there is little chance of you receiving any variation of the 2 options of surgery and RAI treatment until you have much more serious symptoms. You must get your doc or endo to check you out regularly.
It took mine several years to reach the stage of getting agreement for surgery at which point I could hardly move around and had suffered several bouts of pneumonia due to the inability to breath properly.
I do feel like I'm choking on a daily basis, I have a hoarse voice constantly and I have the feeling of being strangled but to be honest although I know it's not normal I'm kinda used to it..
Would the doctor not consider removal due to its size?
That's something you will have to take up with the doctor. If yours is growing outwards rather than inwards it could take some considerable time before the surgeon would consider it appropriate to do his job.
If you have read a number of threads on this forum you will start to believe that our doctors are completely useless and that a trained chimpanzee could make a better job of controlling our thyroid afflictions. To a certain degree this seems to be quite true, but from my personal experiences of the surgeons who have to take on the tricky job of ridding us of part, or all, of our thyroids, I have a great deal of praise. In fact I think they are quite wonderful. It is just that I would not be too keen on using a private hospital, they may very well use some of the very same surgeons they have in the NHS hospitals, but they are judged by the hospital on their ability to earn cash. An NHS surgeon in an NHS hospital was unprepared to complete my operation for a total thyroidectomy as he felt its complications were beyond his abilities - sewed me back together again and sent me home complete with my untouched multinodular goitre. I have 3 scars on my neck but I couldn't care less, I survived! Another surgeon completed the mighty task most successfully. Would the first surgeon have continued the op if his wallet had been involved???????
I do believe that our NHS do a fab job on a daily basis, I'm just frustrated at living through this hell of my unpredictable thyroid...
I'm not sure if this is anxiety or a real symptom but of late but I'm having pins & needles and numbness in my left arm, anyone else with a goitre experience this??
