Cathyjw,
Members are more inclined to share sources when you include background like recent thyroid results and ranges and current thyroid medication.
Hi Clutter,
I know and I do understand the reasons behind that but I'm just waiting on a recent full set and then I will share them. I've had to pay private as my current gp refused to check my free t3 so I haven't had it done In years. I was just doing some research in the meantime as I'm not convinced that I'm converting properly and to try and prepare for an upcoming appt with the endocrinologist.
Ive had hashimotos for 9 years and felt permanently terrible but I've always been told that levothryroxine is the only thing I can have. The only blood tests i have at present were as follows:
Jul 2017
TSH - 0.04 ( 0.35-5)
T4 - 17.6 (7-20)
I've also never been told or advised before looking on this site that the bloods should be done first thing before taking my thyroxine so I'm not sure if this test was accurate or not either.
I should add I don't intend on ordering any t3 until I've had my endo appt and discussed it with the doctor.
Cathyjw,
Thyroid tests are a snapshot in time so they are always accurate but for patients wanting a diagnosis or dose increase it is helpful to test early in the morning when TSH is highest and to fast (water only) as TSH drops after eating and drinking.
To determine whether or not conversion is good you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 measured at the same time.

Yes exactly so now I know that I want to see what my TSH is when I have fasted as this last test was done straight after my breakfast.
Thank you for the advice - these are the bloods tests I am having done privately. Hopefully I will get the results by the end of this week.
Cathyjw,
TSH will probably be higher after fasting.
Sorry you've lost me now as that contradicts your previous statement which stated it is highest first thing in the morning and drops after eating and drinking.
Cathyjw,
Sorry, I meant higher and have edited my reply. May not make a significant difference though.
Hi Clutter,
That's ok no worries. My latest blood tests have now come back and i would really appreciate any advice you can offer on whether or not I might have a conversion problem.
Total thyroxine (t4) 148 (59-154)
TSH 0.04 (0.27-4.2)
Free thyroxine 22.4 (12-24)
Free t3 4.5 (3.1-6.8)
Thyroglobulin antibody <10 (0-115)
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies 52.9 (0-34)
Thanks
Cathy
Cathyjw,
FT3 is under halfway through range so your conversion could be better. I would add a quarter table (6.25mcg) T3 to your existing Levothyroxine dose. If you tolerate it well add a second 6.25mcg at bedtime two weeks later. Hold at 12.5mcg T3 for 6-8 weeks and retest, including FT3, before increasing further.
