Kat, you have to realize that your weight problem is a hormone problem. Instead of worrying about calories and exercise, you have to use eating as a way to change the hormonal balance. Any of Dr. Eric Berg's video about weight explains the theory. He knows all about adrenal glands.

With weight gain your meds aren't quite right. Do you have your latest results and ranges you can share?

If you increase exercise and are not on the correct dosage then you risk depleting the active T3 even more so you won't lose weight but could feel even more fatigued.

I only recently gt diagnosed and had another test on monday. When I was exercising few months ago (when i initially had my test) i felt so energetic tbh and never felt tired. Since stopping the exercise I feel sluggish and tired all the time. Can we still exercise if we have thyroid issue. My dr said tsh level 4.4 isnt so high so started me on 25mcg levothyroxine. Im so confused now because exercising makes me feel so energetic and refreshed 😕

If it makes you feel good, exercise. I have several friends with under active thyroids who are really fit - sea swimming 2 miles and another into dancing every night. I have Hashimotos and managed 4 weeks skiing this year.

I'm not an expert on levels but that TSH does sound high to me. Mine is much nearer zero. I've been on 100micrograms for over 10 years. No doubt thy will be checking your levels again and possibly increasing your dose - they do this gradually.

I originally joined this forum when I was researching because I did feel exercise drained me more than it used to. For me exercise is an important part of feeling good, but I have slipped out of the habit just recently.

Kat

I completely understand how you feel as I too have always until my diagnosis was a very very active and very slim, flat stomached, athletic woman.... changing of my body shape from that, to that of a fat little buddha within a couple of months is the single most depressing aspect of this whole disease........however from all I have read about this condition from experts and from those who have experienced it, it would seem that exercise will not change your body shape/weight while you are under medicated, and I do agree with Heloise and Silverfox.....you must get yourself eating the foods that feed the hormones properly and get yourself properly and optimally medicated. I am sure others with more knowledge and experience than I have, will advise you how to do this.. Good luck. Shon

Well Kat, I'd like to give you some encouragement. If your levels are okay, go for it!

We do all get fatter as we age, unless we do something about it. Yes, our hormones play a big part, but I think if we sit back and do nothing, we will get bigger and bigger. Also, exercise just makes me feel mentally better... once I get over the tiredness ha ha!

I find when I start exercising, I do feel really washed out for the next day or two, but slowly I do get back to being fitter and slimmer, and can then exercise and not feel so bad. More exercise and lowering my portion size and not eating the stupid stuff, or drinking alcohol caused me to lose 10 lbs earlier this year over about 4 months. It is slowly creeping back though as I slip into my old habits.

You have inspired me to do something too, so thank you. I've just weighed myself. 55kg. (I didn't want to as I know I've put weight on) I was just under 53Kg earlier this year and I'd say 52Kg is probably ideal.

So, go for it. Don't make yourself ill, be kind to yourself, but losing weight IS tough, so very best of luck! I am going to do some exercise today and watch my portions!

You need to get full Thyroid test, including antibodies and vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

If you have high antibodies, this means Hashimoto's or autoimmune thyroid disease. Most medics don't understand how Hashimoto's affects everything including fertility.

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

If you do have Hashimoto's then gluten free diet may help, and very likely to have low vitamins as gut absorption is affected.

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers. Medichecks do "Thyroid Thursdays " offers.

25mcg Levo is very low dose. Have you had follow up blood test 6 weeks after starting

Hey i only recently got diagnosed with TSH of 4.4

So only been using these meds for a week. Have had another test on Monday so should know soon enough about Tsh and t4 levels. It all came out through fertility testing. In the past the exercise regimen i had boosted my energy immensely and since stopping that i feel lethargic etc

Monday is too soon to have another thyroid panel done it should be st least 6?weeks? Are you sure that's what it is?

I agree with others thoughts on exercise, be gentle with it until your meds have sorted out the high tag at least

Oh no this was a fertility blood test and it has been over 4 months since my last blood test x

I have Hashimotos Hypothyroid and have found that what works best for me is firstly going gluten free, and secondly a low carb diet, dietdoctor.com has a whole lot of advice and recipes and it works. I am gradually losing weight, changing my shape and without starving myself or wearing myself out with exercise.

Hi Kat,

I know you've had a few cautionary words from some of our members, but I would say go for it. Most of us don't get nearly enough excercise, and often it will improve mood as well as help shift some pounds. Re diet, rather than calorie counting, try leaving out bread and other grain products. Some thyroid patients don't cope well with these even though they're not full celiacs.

Good luck - I think I'll be joining you and cutting out alcohol from today. Many thanks for the inspiration.

Sue

If her ft3 is on the low side too much exercise will wipe her out as exercise depletes t3, hence the advice given for gentle exercise, as her meds level out and everything improves she can then increase her level of exercise because you are right, it does improve your mood etc :-)

Sending you motivation and love 😊 I exercise daily and it makes me feel WAY better, but I also eat very clean. It's my job, so I kind of have to. If it weren't I'd probably weigh 100 stone. 😖 I say: clean eating (and getting the right meds) gets the weight off, exercise improves our mood, stamina, and keeps us looking fit as the weight comes off. Go for it. At the very least it'll make you feel positive, and committed to feeling your best. Also, make sure you continue to search for the perfect combination of meds for YOU. When I was on levo I gained weight no matter what. On T3, I lost it, but only with clean eating and exercise (meaning it put me in a place I COULD lose, but still had to do the work). 💪🏽👊🏽🏆

Oh and gluten free for SURE. Focus on protein, healthy fats and veggies for carbs. Really limit starches but do not limit protein and good fats.

You need to be on Thyroid medication for 6 weeks before you do another thyroid blood test. It takes 6 weeks to get this dose fully into your system so you won't start to feel a. Hangs, if that, till you have been on then a few more weeks. 25 mcg is a low started dose to get your body used to the medication then when retested the doctor will up your meds if your results indicated that. On 25 you are almost certain to need more then you do the cycle again until medication is right for you. This process can take time but it's important that you do it correctly.

Has you doctors told you the correct way to take it? Usually first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and wash don't with a full glass of water to get it quickly into the right place to. E absorbed. Then. I food, only water, for the next hour. Then you can eat. Don't take any other meds etc till two hours after thyroid meds and some things, Vit D, calcium and things like the Pill or HRT till 4 hours after.

Thyroid people usual have low stomach acid which we need to digest everything so it's important we follow this or we may not get the full effect of the medication or any food we eat plus the food lowers absorption

It sounds a lot of rules etc but it's worth doing as not only won't you be getting all the dose of your medication but won't be getting nutrients from your food as well

You can take you meds at night but then that has to be 2-3 hours after food so if you eat late or tend to snack on an evening that won't work

Not what you're looking for?
