Overactive Thyoid diagnosed yesterday!

Hi All, I'm new here! So yesterday I was told I have an overactive thyroid.

I've been feeling weird for a while, hands are shaking, arm keeps going numb, mood swings, muscles aching and generally just feeling worn out and exhausted. Thought I was just being pathetic so haven't really mentioned it to anyone.

Went docs 2 days ago about some eczema on my fingers and got some cream. Chatting away to doctor about work etc and then he asks if my eyes have always been this big?? I said I don't know, I presume so. He said he wasn't happy as they are staring so sent me for blood tests. Went and got them and that was that.

In work yesterday and I got a call from my mum, docs had been in touch and I had to go straight to docs urgently as my blood tests had shown something. So obviously my nerves went.

I went docs and he said it's an under active thyroid. My T4 level was 30 and TSH 0.001

He's gave me some carbimazole 20mg twice a day and I have to go back in a month.

I'm just a little shocked at the diagnosis and to be honest I'm a little worried with the medication I will gain weight as I've always struggled to lose weight and that was a symptom of overactive that I didn't get!

im also just wondering what to expect now??

Thanks for reading my long rant!

Hi,

I have no answers for you. However, wanted to empathasise. I went through a similar process, I had been exhausted for months and thought something was not quite right. Had really dry skin on my hands and went to get cream and asked if I could have the full suite of blood tests to make sure everything was ok. Went for bloods at 7am, gp rang at 6pm and left voicemail saying he needed to see me urgently in the morning as there was an issue with my bloods (not a pleasant evening and gave feedback to the gp, just to tell me in future in the voicemail) . Next morning (shaking with nerves) found out at I had HYPER. I was utterly shocked always been overweight and after two children, even more overweight. My t4 was 56 and my gp will not tell me what my TSH is, just keep saying low.

That was 6 weeks ago. I have been seen by and endo, now officially a pin cushion with random blood tests every week. Trying to get up to speed.

Wanted to say I was shocked too, and still am. My only advice would be give yourself the freedom to digest the diagnosis. I tried to carry on at 100 miles an hour, and that did not work for me.

All the best

Thank you. It helps to know that I'm not alone. I was exactly the same as yourself, I would have expected underactive so much more as I struggle with my weight.

I hope you start to feel better soon! Take care xx
