Hi there . TSH haS come down since starting LEVO from 10.8 to 0.5. Got that latest result today from duty doctor who is a bit rubbish . He suggests that I am now on too high a dose but waiting for my proper doctor

To get back to me - he said he wants me between 0.2 and 1. My question is will they look to reduce

The levo to maintain current level ? Also what happens if numbers keep reducing do I then become hyper ??

What your duty doctor has said sounds reasonable if you are taking Levothyroxine. Yes, if your TSH became very low then you would become hyperthyroid.

You don't become hyper if you are hypo. You can be overmedicated but that is when FT3 and FT4 go over range, not when TSH is low. You can feel hyper if you have Hashis and your thyroid dumps a lot of hormone into the blood stream (but that would show as high FT3 and/or FT4). TSH doesn't make you feel anything

Yes, you're right of course Angel of the NOrth. You can't become hyper if you're hypo. I was thinking about feeling hyper.

Lisaallen,

TSH 0.5 is between 0.2 and 1.0 so he should be happy.

Experience on this forum shows that TSH is likely to be suppressed when we are optimally medicated. Resist all efforts to reduce your medication if you feel better on it. Did they test anything other than TSH? free T3 is far more relevant.

How do you feel?

Hi thanks for responses t4 was the only othe test done and that was right at the beginning . I once tsh drops our labs will only test tsh and it is impossible to get a t3 test from my doctor unless from an endo which he will not refer to me. Some improvement def experienced since taking Levo but would t say totally fine - still cannot lose weight and still some hair loss.

Really would like other tests but don't want to have to pay for a private Endo all suggestions welcome

Rather than pay for a private endo, you could get private tests done through Blue Horizon or Medichecks - assuming you are in the UK. See this link to Thyroid UK website

thyroiduk.org/tuk/testing/p...

You can get fingerprick tests which you can do at home. You get the results in a day or 2, with their doctors comments. There are various tests for thyroid hormones and antibodies and also for vitamins & minerals which are important for helping thyroid meds to work. You can then show these to your doctor and you can post them here for comments (new post so people see it).

What is central and tertiary hypothyroid?

In primary hypothyroidism the thyroid isn't producing enough hormone, and the pituitary notices this and sends a signal (TSH) to the thyroid to produce more hormone. So normally TSH is high, FT4 is low and FT3 is low.

In secondary or central hypothyroidism the pituitary doesn't notice that the thyroid isn't producing enough hormone and doesn't tell the thyroid to produce more. So TSH, FT4 and FT3 are all low.
