Hi there,

I have just been put on T3 20mcg x 2a day which is way too might from me. So I have started to reduce it. My partner and I are trying to concieve at the moment and I was just wondering is it safe to be on T3 while do so. As I read that T3 might not be safe while breast feeding. Appreciate any knowledge.. thanking you in advance 😊😊

Sarah12345678910,

I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't take T3 while trying to conceive. It is recommended the TSH of women planning conception is in the low-normal range 0.4 -2.5.

I don't think there is any research to show whether or not T3 is safe to take during pregnancy. The British Thyroid Association don't support the use of T3 during pregnancy and recommend women switch to Levothyroxine until after delivery. Levothyroxine dose is usually increased by 25-50mcg when pregnancy is confirmed.

So the British thyroid association don't support taking t3 during pregnancy? That's slightly worrying for me..as I've just started taking t3 .😐

I don't really know what's the right thing to do..

Thank you for your swift reply to my question Clutter.

Muchly appreciated ☺

Sarah12345678910,

You can take it now. Other members have taken T4+T3 combination and T3 only through pregnancy without problems but they were pressured to quit T3.

13. The serum TSH reference range in pregnancy is 0·4–2·5 mU/l in the first trimester and 0·4–3·0 mU/l in the second and third trimesters or should be based on the trimester-specific reference range for the population if available. These reference ranges should be achieved where possible with appropriate doses of L-T4 preconception and most importantly in the first trimester (1/++0). L-T4/L-T3 combination therapy is not recommended in pregnancy (1/+00).

I seem to recall that being hypo. during pregnancy is bad news for the baby. Can't comment on T3. Thought process...if you need T3 rather than T4 to stop hypo. then taking T4 will not help but may make thyrotoxic therefore need T3. Some medical research is needed here.
