Vitamin D difficiency

Thank you for posting your knowledge on this site. I continue to suffer from above. My last test result was 29. I am titrating off PPI's hoping this is the culprit. I am currently taking 5000 ICU's per day of Vitamin D but wonder if this will help. My question is: what are the causes of low Vitamin D even with supplementation?

DeniceC,

Most vitD is produced via ultraviolet sunlight on the skin and very little is absorbed via food so it is unlikely PPIs have caused vitD deficiency.

I would double your dose to 10,000iu for 6 weeks to boost your level and then reduce to 5,000iu and retest in 3 months. VitD is optimal around 100 nmol/L.

Assume as you on here you have a thyroid problem? If. It's autoimmune thyroid, known as Hashimoto's, then having vitamin D deficiency is extremely common.

We either need more, struggle to use it, or can't make it as well as non- autoimmune people

How can I tell if I have Hashimotos's? My daughter was diagnosed when she was pregnant but is only on 25 mcg if Synthroid.

You need Thyroid antibodies tested. There are two sorts, TPO and TG. If they are above range then you have Hashimoto's

See The Thyroid Pharmacist website for masses of info about Hashimoto's

and take you vitamin D together with the Vitamin K2- M7 it will help absorption. helping your bones and not cushion your arteries. x
