Daughter in ICU

For those of you that have given me helpful info since I have signed on, here is my update. After a 24hr treatment of potassium iodine, my daughter went into horrible thyroid storm. Her T3 is at 29 and her resting heart rate was at 177. She has been admitted to ICU for constant monitoring and IV beta blockers. They are now giving steroids and another med to try and bind to the hormones and flush them from her body. Her heart rate is down to 125 now with the constant IV but immediately increases even when they are just changing the bag. Her calcium levels are elevated as well. I'm sure this will turn around in the next 24-48 hours but is very stressful. SHe is so jittery and her mind is just cluttered. Asking for prayers and good thoughts for her for a speedy recovery from this storm. Thank you

I assume she had toxic nodules if she had that awful reaction to iodine? So those nodules have escaped from control of TSH and iodine just triggers more harm.

I hope things settle down soon! Sounds very scary.

She is a poor soul right enough and it is an immense worry for the whole family.

Thankfully she was in hospital when it happened.

We look forward to updates that she is improving quicky.

Hoping your daughter recovers quickly and is home safe and well very soon.

I think I'm right in saying that it was a doctor who suggested your daughter should take potassium iodide. This is a very odd suggestion to make (in my opinion) to someone who has an overactive thyroid. I would suggest finding another doctor.

Hi Reglivmama. I am sorry to hear your daughter has experienced a thyroid storm.....Last year I too had a thyroid storm. It was very scary....my pulse rate went up to 185, my T4 was over 90 and it felt as if my heart was coming out of my chest. I experienced awful delirium, I shook violently, my muscles ceased to work and I thought I was never going to get better.....I was given iodine and within 48 hours could feel it working. Amazing stuff! I am sorry it did not suit your daughter. I was in hospital for 3 months, tried all the drugs and treatment to try to save my thyroid but non worked so I had a thyroidectomy last June and a year later am feeling much better still get a bit tired but put that down to old age I am 65...my levels are still a bit high but dr tweeking them. My husband thinks my body must be made of good stuff as this was the 11th operation I have had and he thought this might finish me, but with the help of my Endocrinologist and his clinical knowledge (I was a lucky one!) and the Drs at the hospital I am now home and enjoying my first grandchild.

I will pray for your daughter, she will come through this, it takes a long time, but I'm sure she will get there.......

I send hugs as that helped me last year.....

Thank you for your support. The endocrinologists have said she is just extremely med resistant and as soon as they can get her levels down they will surgically remove. She is just a rare case that medical normal regimes just don't work well on her. Hopefully she will be moved today from ICU to IMC. We are still looking at a minimum of 5 more days in hospital depending how it goes.
