Overactive thyroid : Hi all been diagnosed with... - Thyroid UK
Overactive thyroid
I was diagnosed graves disease in May 2015 and was very hyper . T4 was 86 ( 10 - 26 ) and resting pulse was 122 . I also gained two stones in weight . Did 15 months on carbimazole . Stopped last September and then got started back on them in February. I am now on a very low dose of 5 mg which I take every other day . My weight is now back to what it was prior to the graves disease being diagnosed. Hope that helps and that you start to feel better soon .
Hi i have been taking carbimazole since 1999 had a break for two years when i had half of my thyroid removed in 2013 due to nodules but thyroid went overactive again cant say my weight has altered much maybe only up to 6 pounds put weight on round the middle though my hair has suffered gone thin and split ends which is quite a worry and also was diagnosed with osteoporosis 3 years ago, due to go for check up at the hospital Tuesday they will probably ask me to have radio active iodine again but just dont want that i am thinking if i feel ok why change things who knows how i would feel after that hope you lose your weight good luck .
What dose are you on? Are you having regular blood tests, at least every 8 weeks!
I'm currently taking 25mg once daily blood test every 4 weeks. I'm so unhappy at the moment which makes me also reach for sugary snacks
It's not an easy disorder I'm afraid. You need to be kind to yourself. Rest/sleep when you need to, and (sorry) try to eat a good, healthy diet. Stress is very bad for you when you have Graves, and its also harder to deal with it too.
Make a point of getting a print out of your thyroid results, then you can keep an eye on your levels.
Have you been on the same dose all along? It would be worth putting your last results up ( with ranges) for members to comment on. It can be easy to be over medicated on Carbimazole and become hypo.
You may also be low in certain vits/mins which may make you feel worse i.e. Vit D, B12 and Iron. Being hyper means the body doesn't have a chance to absorb nutrients when it's in overdrive! Get your GP to test.
