Pjleagas,

There's no need to be terrified, hyperthyroidism is manageable. You are producing too much T4 and T3 thyroid hormone and should be prescribed Carbimazole to reduce levels. Many hyperthyroid patients are able to wean off Carbimazole after 12-18 months but if you have Graves antibodies remission isn't permanent in more than 50% of patients. If remission fails you can either resume taking Carbimazole or consider thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine ablatement (RAI). The latter two will make you permanently hypothyroid so shouldn't be undertaken lightly.

Thank you. I was on 10mg carbimazole and 80mg propanol. After my panic attacks yesterday the doctor has upped my carbimazole to 40mg. I feel peculiar and wonder if this is normal. I am hoping that the panic attacks stop! I don't normally get them. I started my medication on the 2nd September. Does it take a long time to feel better?

Pjleagas,

I'm not hyperthyroid so don't have experience of Carbimazole but from what I've read it does take a few weeks to bring down levels and if your GP has increased dose to 40mg I think your levels must have remained high on 10mg.

Try and have thyroid levels checked every 4-6 weeks because 40mg will probably bring down levels very quickly and dose will then need adjusting down to avoid you becoming hypothyroid.

Thank you for the link. I shall be glad when this panicky feeling had gone and l stop having panic attacks. Does anyone else have them?

Even people who are hypo/hashi's have panic attacks. I think its due to the rush of antibodies or just our body settling down. You could put up another post headed 'Panic Attacks' and members who've had them will respond.

Does anyone have panic attacks with under/overactive thyroid. If so, how did you get by?

Hi Pjleagas just seen your posts sorry you are experiencing panic attacks it must be quiet scary for you maybe once the higher dose carbimazole kicks in you will start feeling better. I haven't had them but when I was hypo and on cambimazole had good results on it so sincerely hope you soon feel much better .

I can only say that what Clutter has said that hyperthyroid is controllable is very true so have faith and try and keep calm while the medication takes effect.

Wishing you well very soon Silverlady5

Hi I'm hyper with Graves Disease. The anxiety and panic attacks were my first symptom of hyper... It's horrible but it will settle down once the Carbimazole kicks in. I found the propranolol made me feel a bit strange but you will get used to it. I found it better to split my Carbimazole into two equal doses 12 hours apart. I'm 12 months into my journey so you can message me if you need someone to chat to 😀

Thank you. Just gone back to bed because I feel so panicky. I hate the feeling of not being able to breathe, not that anyone would like it! I split my tabs into two times otherwise it is a lot. Did the panic last for long? I have only been on the higher dose for a couple of days, was just on 10mg for the first couple of weeks. Thank you so much.

It may be several weeks before your levels lower. Everyone is different so it's difficult to say how long it will last but you just need to know that no matter how bad you feel it will pass. Try to rest as much as possible, eat good food and stay away from stress. Listen to some music or read a book or chat to friends. Most of all try to be kind to yourself x

Just had to stop the carbimazole cos they think it went up too high too quickly. Should get bloods back this afternoon. Has made me feel more panicky, just wish the panicking would stop. X
