Thyroxine at night benefits?

Hi

Just wondered if anyone takes thyroxine at night instead of the morning. I find it difficult to wait an hour after taking medication to have breakfast & coffee in the morning. Just wondered if it has the same benefits as I've read you get better absorption. I would be grateful for people's thoughts or advice.

I used to, then I changed back.

But since joining this forum I have learned that it is good to take it at night as long as it is at least two hours after last food or drink - apart from water.

I think next winter I will have to change back to night time as daylight hours too few for me. Don't think I will manage a full hour on water without my Decaf tea and banana !

I think it is a personal choice really because some are on other treatments or medication as well. If it suits you to take it at night then go for it.

Thank you I think I will give it a go. Do you take other supplements like folic acid. Would I have to take them at the same time. X

You should never take anything at the same time as levo, just water.

I don't take any other supplements like folic acid at the moment. However since recent blood tests that may change! Seeing doctor soon.

I take Levothyroxine alone. Anything else far away from it at different time.

I changed to taking at bedtime, (on suggestion originally of my endocrinologist). I found it significantly better & very convenient

No more delay in morning waiting an hour for cup of tea or breakfast. Also because have to take it on empty stomach (nothing apart from water for 2 hours min prior) it has stopped me snacking in the evening.

On rare occasions that we eat out late, I just take in middle of night when get up for the loo.

You shouldn't take any other medications or supplements with or near Levo (apart from possibly vitamin c)

Some like iron or magnesium at least 4 hours away.

If you go to the loo in the middle of the night you could take it then.

Levo should be taken two hours away from supplements and other medication, four hours for iron, calcium, Vit D and magnesium.

Hi Queenie.

I've really struggled with hypothyroidism for the last 18yrs or so. And was initially told, like many of us to take my meds in the morning.

But like you I had trouble keeping routine and having to wait to eat.

Then about 7 months ago I found some info on people taking it at night and the benefits. So decided to give it a go.

7 months later my energy levels are dramatically better and I'm virtually leading a normal life again, able to work full days once more.

Apparently taking thyroxine at night produces better absorbtion results and as long as you wait a couple of hours after eating you don't have that issue of food interferring.

It's been great for me and highly recommend trying it for anyone else who doesn't like the morning regime.
