This article seems to relate to healthy people and states that there is 'no particular benefit for healthy people to have blood levels above 20 nanograms per milliliter' People with thyroid disease cannot absorb vit D easily and need to take supplements and be optimal at the higher end of the range.

Just as devil's advocate, if it is showing up on your blood test does that not show you have absorbed it?

I have posted this because I think it is always helpful to open up the discussion rather than just talk to yourself all day, I'm not advocating either view.

We have to decide which route is best suited to us personally I think. I follow grassrootshealth.net with their Newsletters. Website looks old fashioned but SO much good research and information ...

I wonder who is behind the article ?? I have read that they are putting VitD into the new generation of statins now - as the only benefit of a statin is the VitD like effect of being anti-inflammatory :-) So now we will never know ....

Well the NYT is known for publishing all sorts of health-related content and then weeks later publishing the opposing view :-) but I guess it is all news.

I thought it was interesting as the anti-'Big Pharma' view is common here but may not to take into account that people make money when we have blood tests and people make money when we buy books and supplements and subscribe to websites.

And of course if you're offered statins in the usual way, which one will you feel better about taking, the one w/o vit d or the one w?

That looks like a good site, no crazy advertising.

The grassrootshealth.net website has been updated and is now much more modern. I preferred the old one to be honest!

Sorry I don't have time to read this article in full. Just a quick glance they state there is no evidence that vitamin D reduces cancer. This is not true, it does reduce the risk of some forms of cancer. So I wouldn't pay too much attention to this article. The best approach is prudent sun exposure when you can and moderate supplementation in the winter.
