Advice please for 18 year old daughter

Hi my daughter is having numerous symptoms of hypothyroidism and a recent blood test showed

TSH of 3.97 (0.9 - 3.11)

FT4 of 9.4 (7.9 - 13.3)

No T3 tested.

Could this be an indication of thyroid problems as we were told her results were 'normal'

Thanks

If those are the 'normal ranges' then TSH isn't is it? It's high.

It's high anyway for someone with HYPO symptoms.

Would your daughter consider askiing GP to do blood test for Thyroid Antibodies also? And ask him to send her for an Ultrasound scan of her Thyroid? To confirm or eliminate Hashimoto'sAutoimmune Thyroiditis As she has the symptoms?

If she has Hashi's then they need to get her TSH much lower.

All the best with that.

This is from Thyroiduk.org.uk and you will realise of course that your daughter's TSH is just over the range. However that doesn't matter to the British Thyroid Association and others who state that the TSH has to reach 10 before being given thyroid hormone replacements. This is ridiculous and which has caused more distress and symptoms for patients who believe doctors have some idea about hypothyroidism.

We have to read and learn and I also think that symptoms should be a priority rather than the blood test and TSH may never rise high enough for diagnosis.

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Blood tests have to be the very earliest, fasting (she can drink water) and she should allow a gap of approx 24 hours between the last dose and the test and take afterwards.

My TSH was 3.8 when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (when symptoms started) many years ago. I wasn't diagnosed with hypothyroidism until years later when my TSH was 35 but looking back now, it's obvious that the fibromyalgia diagnosis was a nonsense but it was actually the start of being hypothyroid.

rfu123 you are right. I did an experiment on myself a little while back and discovered that my serious hypothyroidism sets in with a TSH of 1.1. If I were in the UK and waiting to hit a TSH of 10 I would be long dead. What a terrible state of affairs.

Yes, you are right (again) it is a pituitary problem. Thanks for that insight, it verifies an idea I have.
