I keep getting pain in my neck where my thyroid sits. In the mornings I sound as if I'm a smoker and my voice is weak first thing but does become stronger by mid morning. I do have an autoimmune problem as my anti - thyroglobulin abs are 313.2 (<115). My doctor had never paid any attention to this figure anyway. Should I ask for a scan...? Is it necessary...? I'm on 100mcgs Levo and 10mcgs T3. I hate going to the doctors as I come away feeling as if I've wasted their time. But my neck feels weird. Any suggestions..! Thanks

Thyroid scan.... who qualifies..?
Suzy61Taylor,
Ask your GP to palpate your throat and neck. If s/he feels a lump or swelling it would be a good idea to refer you for a thyroid scan expecially if your voice has become hoarse recently.
Thyroglobulin antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.
Looking back to your thread of 3 years ago - your anti-bodies were below range. Interesting - and could be an alert for those that are told they do not have Hashimotos - but it would certainly be worth testing on a regular basis to keep a check.
Scan - here in Crete scans are part of the diagnosis with walk-in clinics in many places. I would certainly suggest one as sometimes the node can be at the back and pressing inwards - so not always obvious from the front
You could ring your local Nuffield and ask how much to have one privately if you do not want to involve the GP. My Acupuncturist once gave me a referral note for a back MRI when I was visiting the UK - so it does not have to be the GP ....
Hi Suzy61Taylor,
You wrote this a year ago and wondered if you are still on this site and if so, were you able to get a scan? How your neck pain is now and did they treat it or identify it? I also have been complaining of neck pain. Mine is not constant, it comes and goes but really hurts when I get it. Sometimes when I yawn it is excrutiating pain.
Let me know if they did any more tests and what has happened on this.
Thanks
