Hi, I just read article about female hirsutism and there was said that depression medicine Prozac could cause hirsutism. Do somebody know this and why it is causing that? It is not nice to know that taking some medicine could make your symptoms worse when having PCOS.

Did not notice wife becoming hairy! On the other hand it was the only way she was able to continue to work as a teacher. Stopped taking when retired.

Glynisrose,

Depression is a SYMPTOM of hypothyroid not a seperate thing!

Please REFRAIN from making this comment.

Whilst there is no question that thyroid disfunction (both hypo and hyper) can be a cause of depression, there are other causes too. And it IS possible for a person to have depression as a separate thing at the same time as having thyroid disfunction.

As you so rightly point out, there are many reports of depression in those who are hyperthryoid/thyrotoxic - as well as hypothyroid. (For the avoidance of any possible confusion: Not referring to those whose treatment for hyperthyroidism has rendered them hypothyroid. This is while actually hyperthyroid.)
