Tateanne You will struggle to lose weight unless you are optimally medicated and with these latest results from your profile:

February 2017

TSH 4.96 (0.3-5)

T4 10.5 (7-20)

T3 5.3 (3-6)

Increase levo to 100mcg

you are are nowhere near optimally medicated. For most hypo patients we need TSH to be 1 or below or wherever it is needed for FT4 and FT3 to be in the upper part of their respective reference ranges.

I presume as you've had an increase in your Levo you will be re-testing after 6-8 weeks and increases/re-testing should be continued until you feel well.

You do actually have a rather high FT3 compared to a low FT4 and high TSH. Your TSH and FT4 shout Hypothyroidism but your FT3 is in a very good place for someone who is being treated. That's very strange.

Yes retested in 7 weeks. It is frustrating as I seem to be getting just bigger, more breathless too as well as my eyes are playing up. My FT3 has always been a good place right from the start.

It can be a long and frustrating road trying to get well when hypothyroid. Half the time doctors don't seem to know what they're doing.

I wonder what will happen when you reach a point where your TSH comes down and your FT4 increases resulting in an even higher FT3.

No idea

Except that FT3 often rises, for as long as it can, when there is insufficient thyroid hormone available.

When FT4 rises (assuming ti does) FT3 might actually drop a little - or dstay the same.

Are the ranges skewed if it's not straightforward hypothyroidism?

I've lost about a stone in the past year, but don't take T4.

Before medicating, I found restrictive eating helped, & prefer not to eat before 11am-12 or after 6-7pm. I've still stuck to this as it gives my meds plenty of time to work.

Gosh that must be really difficult only eating in the afternoon - I'd be starving and my blood sugar would be really low. ... I have to eat something every 4 hrs!

I thought that, as I'd previously preferred grazing all day. Obviously. I wouldn't have this eating pattern if it was difficult.

As long as I eat enough in the daytime, I tend to only get thirsty in the evening. If I am hungry after 7, I eat some more kefir or nuts.

I didn't know there were other health benefits when I started to eat this way, & it's better for THs & mineral absorption.

I use the MyFitnessPal app. It's based on old fashioned calorie counting and you can tweak the calorie intake, or projected weight loss. Also adds on calories for exercise. I lost 10lb and hoping to lose a bit more soon. It's hard tho, even when adequately medicated. I do a lot of swimming so some days it's really difficult to meet the calorie needs of that and my normal activity, thus creating a calorie deficit.

I also used Myfitnesspal, brilliant, slow but sure, good old fashioned way, no fad diets, I lost 3.5 stone, it took me 10 months but I did it. I lunch out frequently and it gave me the tools to be sensibly selective, half way through I took up walking and did 2 miles every morning that gave me the boost to assist the slow metabolism aspect.

I wish I could lose weight but my myxoedema is stuck with me for life it seems.

T3 is supposed to help with myxoedema, I've started loosing weight from my chunky legs. :)

I am very happy for you. I remember what it was like for me when I lost all my weight. I messed it up though as I ran out of T3 for three months and put it all back on again. Don't be like me. Keep taking those T3 tablets!

I'm happiest about not being cold all the time, the most out of every NDT & T3 benefit! The weight loss is nice, but I now look older & wrinkly. :(

I learned the hard way what will happen if I'm undermedicated. I missed a dose of T3 at the start of December, then stupidly went straight back to NDT only. It's only the last week that I've felt brave enough to drop T3 & introduce NDT again, It's taken 10 weeks to catch up with feeling back to "normal" as a lot of my skin issues returned. I shall never forget again!

It's very frustrating isn't it! I've used fitness pal, made no difference. It's just a case of adjusting to the new me and hoping that once my levels are better, I will feel better and it will be easier to push myself exercise wise. I've never had a 'belly' and now I have one. A year ago I was a size 12 now I'm going inTo a size 20.....when will I stop 'growing'!! Frustrating!

That's exactly me tateanne. I have accepted that I'm not me until I find a doctor who can help me, I'm on 300mcg daily of T3 with no sign of my oedema going and I'm reluctant to go any higher without some medical support. Three and a half years ago all my oedema went but as I have to pay for it myself I ran out of money so stopped taking it for three months. During that time my oedema came back with a fury and now it won't shift at all no matter how much I try with T3.

I can't afford to buy so I have to rely on my doctor who is very good for me tbh. However I am awaiting to see a neurologist about some aspects that aren't true to thyroid i.e. My eyes as my levels aren't high enough. So I'm going to ask that my pituitary gland be scanned by an MRI.
