If you don't have the contrast the thyroid won't show up. An MRI scan might be an alternative but it depends exactly what they are looking for. Are you concerned about allergy? Or toxicity? If allergy raise your concerns and ask for a skin test prior to the scan. Goodluck

Hi

I had a contrast dye not for a goitre but to scan something else.

I was concerned about it but I was fine, no problem at.

When my daughter needed it for a scan they gave her steroids first as she suffers from several allergies so they gave her the steroid to be on the safe side.

I would speak to your consultant to put your mind at rest.

Good luck.

The very best way of getting an answer is to ask the people who are going to do the scan. You probably have a telephone number on your appointment letter, or could just call the hospital switchboard.

Ask them. Tell them why you are concerned. Don't let them just say "Don't worry, it will be fine." - unless they can explain why. Maybe they can offer an alternative (such as no contrast injection, or a different scanning technology)?

Obviously, that might not provide the complete answer, but it is possibly the best way of starting to get there.

Far better to ask before your appointment. If yours is cancelled after the discussion, it can be offered to someone else. If you leave it until the day of the appointment, it will be wasted.
