Goitre

I've recently visited the doctors with a lump in my throat, they diagnosed it as a goitre, I was referred to have an ultra sound, I'm 16 and a little worried as I have never even heard of a goitre, I was wondering if anyone has had this or had this, should I be worried, I also have an underachiever thyroid.

Monica, the ultrasound will be used as a means to determine the size and extent of the goitre. It will also pick up any cysts or nodules. Don't be too worried. There can be reasons for the situation that are not necessarily super serious. I.e. this can also come about through Epstein Barr virus (infectious mono) and other viral infections. It may be a temporary situation. Just keep us informed, we're here to be supportive of you.

But I must say, I LOVE your expression: 'underachiever thyroid'. That's a keeper! I am going to use that term from now on. 'As Monica says, it's an underachiever thyroid'. Welcome to the ThyroidUK forum.

Yup underachiever thyroid suggests that it really is trying but just not making the grade

Reminiscent of school reports that say 'must try harder'

Thank you for reassuring me, I use that term because under active sounds a little scary, I feel welcome to the forum (: x

Welcome to the forum. Have you been given the actual results of your blood test? If not ask your GP for them and make sure you get the ranges as well as they differ from lab to lab. When you have these then please post them on here and then we know how best to advise you. Be aware doctors often say your results are 'normal'! With the thyroid what is normal for one person may not be normal for another. How you feel is more important but posting your results is a good starting point for getting advice in the forum.

The blood tests say I'm low on something, because I'm 16 my mum can't get my results so I have no idea what they're telling me, it's all really medical, all I know is that in 2 weeks time I'm at the hospital for a ultrasound x

Hi, Monica.

It's good that you have been diagnosed with an under active thyroid alongside the goitre. Very often the goitre grows (it's a swelling of the thyroid gland) because your thyroid is not producing enough hormones. Hopefully there is nothing to worry about with the swelling, and if you are put on the right medication (replacement thyroid hormones) the swelling will go back down because your thyroid won't have to work so hard. Good luck, and let us know how you get on. Xx

Go and see a homeopath or applied Kiniesiologist....they will give you supplements to help support your thyroid gland and in time it's possible the goitre will disappear and your throid activity return to normal. Often stress is the reason for these things. Worth a shot if you are not keen on taking lots of pharmaceuticals.

in reply toTattyhead53

Welcome MG!

the alternative therapy practitioners mentioned are not available on the NHS. Maybe wait and see what the scan shows. In the meantime it would do you nothing but good to take a good quality multi-vitamin, particularly containing Vits B12 and D3.

Either you or your Mum is entitled to your blood tests results by law. Be gently insistent (or get your Mum to be!). Be prepared to have to write down what they tell you. The figures will not (yet) mean much to you, but they will to people on this forum. So do post them here when you have them. As well as the actual results ask them for 'ranges' (the figures between which the results are deemed to be normal - these can vary widely across labs and practices).

Was about to say the same thing, as a minor you mum is entitled to ask. Under the freedom of information act they cannot refuse! If you have got a long term problem then don't worry, we are here to help you as its a bit daunting at first. We have all been there so ask anything you are unsure about or don't understand. The scan will be straight forward. May be a little light pressure on your neck and some gel put on the area to help the scanner make a good contact and glide over the area easily. I always think the gel the worse thing but only because it feels cold!

in reply to

multivitamins do not work. and the d3 they sell in the shops is toxic.

Iodine will resolve your goitre but you need to cut down on fluoride chlorine and bromine

so distilled water is far more beneficial than tap water as tap water contains fluoride and chlorine. bromine is put into bread all these 3 replace iodine in the body.

in reply to

Do you have evidence that good quality multivitamins do not work, Jinni?

in reply to

Yep

In ww2 the british army tested supplements on thousands of british soldiers and concluded that they had no effect on health.

this report is how the army resolved the deficiencies of vitamins and minerals by the amount of food they had to give the troops there is no way the army would of provided so much food if a pill works due to the expense. history.amedd.army.mil/book...

we cannot synthesize nature and you can only get a vitamin from live food.

The best way is to grow food yourself and eat it when its live the most nutrient dense foods are stinging nettles, alf alfa chlorella, hemp seeds, wheatgrass, raw honey is awesome but its very difficult to get it now without the bees being fed on high fructose syrup due to the pesticides that are killing off the plants 50% of the bee population has died and there is still not enough pollen for them to use.

in reply to

So, what is our remedy if we are not fortunate enough to have the land or the spare energy to cultivate our own food?

in reply to

Do you have friends that want to get healthy, form a group between you where you share the work and knowledge, Learning about the body is fascinating and virtually any disease can be cured with the right knowledge.

an ad on gumtree would draw in other people,

Stinging nettles grow everywhere there is good soil, use the soil for your garden,

Aquaponics is a great way if you have limited space or vertical farming in a flat just on the windows (windows only let in UVA light which is damaging to humans) so blocking the bad light by growing food is perfect.

You are on a computer so go and research this stuff yourself, take responsibility for your life you are the only person that can help you.

and if your brain isn't as sharp as it used to be start taking some iodine lugols is ok even though they have decreased the strength of it 2 drops in the morning after some food and 2 drops around 3 pm this is when our bodies start to fatigue, grow some watercress on your window sills this is very high in sulphur and also a good source of iodine also take the iodine and sulphur in pure or distilled water.

You could also take some apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon morning and 3pm (high in potassium mix with raw honey to make the uptake of the vinegar even more potent) and sodium bicarbonate you can take a couple of grams a day with the pure water this is perfect to getting the balance of your blood right (7 to 1 ratio) and have some Epsom salt baths (magnesium) with Borax 2 cups of Epsom and one cup of Borax in the bath. do this for 10 nights straight and this will return your blood back to perfect

when you come up against the pharmaceuticals games like when they tell you borax is toxic use google scholar and find out for yourself that borax is only toxic if you are under 9 months old. if I owned a pharmaceutical company and I earned 1 billion pounds a year and there was a product that cost 2 pounds and would stop me earning this would I spend a million pounds to put people off finding out about that cure business is business.

one other thing is take some organic sea salt (76 minerals which are essential to your health and are taken out of table salt) 1 gram a day try and avoid the Himalayan one as it contains ferric iron which is not good for our body (Kellogs put this in their cereals so avoid all their products)

The quality of our soils has decreased so much so using the correct minerals elements is essential to removing the toxins that are part of our life and what cause disease in our bodies, all these things will benefit everyone just using borax and magnesium will remove the arthritis pain within a few days for most people and once you have removed the baddies out of your system and cleared your brains out you can go and help other people.

Our minds are conditioned to putting barriers up the only thing that stops us doing anything is our minds.

try and only buy cold pressed stuff organic is better than normal although these foods still have toxins in which is why we need to grow our own food,

turnips are excellent as well and very fast growing and remineralise the soil, if you do get a group together buy some fulvic acids and humic acids to make the soil better than anything you can get, do not use chemical fertilisers they stop the uptake of a lot of nutrients like sulphur and boron/borax.

in reply to

I can see you live a very full life, Jinni. I hope you feel the benefits of your endeavours.

Bromine IS NOT ADDED TO BREAD in Europe.

Iodine will not always resolve goitres. And the whole process of checking iodine levels and supplementing (if appropriate) is riddled with difficulties and questions.

Much UK tap water has virtually no fluoride.

Rod

in reply tohelvella

OK that's good that bromine isn't added into bread although it is in the plastic that is used to wrap it so although you think your government are doing good in fact they are not.

it is in about 75% of the worlds populations bread and there are other ways of getting it into us

BROMIDE SOURCES

plastics (computers, car seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and more)

citrus flavored sodas (BVOs in Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca)

pesticides

medications (Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (ulcers), anesthesias)

fire retardants (polybromo diphenyl ethers/PBDEs in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, mattresses)

(European Union banned the use of some PBDE (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) compounds)

hot tub and swimming pool treatments

drinking water containing bromide + exposed to ozone-->bromate ions (oxidizers)

personal care products: permanent waves, hair dyes, and textile dyes (sodium bromate)

cosmetics (preservative: benzalkonium)

2 drops a day of iodine is a fair amount and something that we should all be taking 90% of goitres are because of iodine deficiency.

so 10% may not respond but then there are other things that you do like take borax to work on the parathyroid increase your hydrogen peroxide intake so that the iodine in the thyroid works better why would anyone trust someone else with their health when there is so much information on the internet.

they put the bare minimum in iodized salt just enough so goitres won't show then after a few weeks the iodine evaporates out of the salt.

cancer is caused by a lack of iodine in some cases and a lot of cancers respond to iodine treatment.

Hello, Just joined as have been researching about lump in throat , swelling; have hypothyroid symptoms, was wondering jinni73, if you have any references regarding iodine deficiency causing 90% goitres, also arn't there risks in taking large ammounts of iodine- I have looked on examine.com and it shows studies where large ammounts of iodine have slightly increased goitres

in reply togoodraw

You obviously have to monitor your body while taking anything different in repairing your body always be prepared to stop taking anything when you get an adverse reaction always keep a diary of every day in relation to your illness and then you can see yourself getting better,

the body works backwards when repairing itself fixing one symptom after another so you will always need more amino acids and minerals here are my notes on Iodine get a thorough understanding then this will enable you to carry on educating yourself because how important is your health.

When trying to correct Iodine problems the first point is to remove items that inhibit Iodine absorption like the halogen elements Fluorine or the toxic Sodium Fluoride (this one is put into our water and creates many problems within the body from anxiety to calcification of soft tissues due to fluorides affinity with calcium) Chlorine and Bromine.

The original Lugols formula that contained 10% iodine is optimal for the human body

10% is the way to go cures skin cancer and all other types of cancer especially when mixed with DMSO

Use Iodine and DMSO to cure sebaceous cysts

lugols is 5% iodine and potassium iodide takes it up to about 7%

iodineresearch.com/

put iodine into a nebulizer for aerosol treatment for transdermal effect into the lung tissues in the case of lung cancer, emphysema, asthma and tuberculosis.

do the same with magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and glutathione

it takes about 3 months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine and a year to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily

Patients should push their dosages higher and higher until they get the desired result but I recommend doing this slowly unless there is little time as is the case in emergency situations or very late stage cancer. When using the Nascent Iodine one can dose pulse every two hours orally taking each individual dose up to as many as 20 drops and even at this level we are no where near points of iodine toxicity and tolerance

One should start at low dosages and monitor for detox reactions, which will be less if sodium bicarbonate

Iodine for candida

members.upnaway.com/~poliow...

When you take Levothyroxine, you are actually taking in iodine. The Levothyroxine (T4) which has 4 iodine molecules is converted into the form the body can use - T3 (Triiodothyronine) which has 3 molecules of iodine, by removing one molecule of iodine. If you have any function left in your thyroid then it can use that iodine. So, theoretically, you would not need to take in any more iodine.

The cells throughout the body contain special receptors that are intended for iodine, but that become occupied instead by fluoride

naturalnews.com/039221_fluo...

Iodine intake immediately increases the excretion of bromide, fluoride, and some heavy metals including mercury and lead

3) Lugol’s Solution which is standardized to 10% iodine, although due to FDA interference most Lugol’s today is 4% or 2% strength. Nevertheless, we will base the math on the traditional 10% Lugol’s formulation. This is a combination iodine product made with Potassium Iodide (76.5% iodide) and Elemental Iodine. The way the math works on this one, 2 drops of Lugol’s is the equivalent 13mg dose of an Iodine/Potassium Iodide blend. Because some of that iodide is in a potassium iodide format, which contains some potassium, somewhat less than 13mg is going to be iodine. After all is said and done this nets a total around 11gm of iodine per 2 drops. And, this allows the patient to have the benefit of both iodine and iodide, although this is a less relevant concern for people using Lugol’s for radiation protection. This means that around 24 drops of Lugol’s 10% solution is require to deliver the 130mg dose required for radiation protection.

Always use Borax and Magnesium in aiding detox

When we drink alcohol or eat sugar this causes fermentation and fungi develops in our bodies this is a major cause of illness and Iodine clears this out.

Always use distilled water never tap water bottled or spring water to be on the safe side they are even putting fluoride in this now although not all spring water.

No matter what your age, take someone with you to your appointments - I do this (husband or daughter) because it helps having someone else ask questions if you forget, and I really feel it helps add "weight" to anything you say, and also to remember anything that the doctor says to you.

As everyone else has said, always ask for a printout of your test results - my GP prints mine off now as I walk into the room!

Hi Minocageller,

Try not to worry about the goitre (a fancy name for a lump on your thyroid) because often as not they do go away of their own accord. I had a goitre on my left thyroid lobe over 18 months ago and it's now gone of it's own accord without treatment. They do come and go and it may be that your diet is causing it. Some foods contain goitregenous compounds that in some people cause goitres on the thyroid. These foods are mainly from the brassica family, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, plus other foods, soya, walnuts, almonds. There's a long list of other foods and if you look on the Thyroid UK website you will see them listed. I do have a list on my PC but I cannot find it at the moment.

Good luck and if you need someone to chat please keep in touch.

TT xx

Hi, my son is 14 an also has a Goiter so I can understand how you are unsettled you may be feeling.

His blood tests are normal and his scan was ok, but he is now being monitored closely (his vitamin D was low even after spending all summer outside, so please ask for a test for this)

It's important that you see a consultant specialist at the hospital for your Thyroid rather than your GP as they are more expert and will do more blood tests than your GP.

The Goiter should go down when you are on the right medication but it can take time.

Get a copy of your blood test when you see the doctor - it is your 'right' so don't let them refuse just because you are young.

I assume you have had a stressful year with exams and stuff, which can also affect your health.

This site has a lot of people who are unwell because they their condition has been left untreated for a long time so please don't let stuff on here worry you further or depress you, you are young and should be ok.

Any queries about anything , please ask anything on the forum.

Morning Monica,

I have a multinodular goitre and it really isn't anything to worry over, once you have had the ultrasound just to confirm the lumps are benign.

One thing that did help we was taking Sea Kelp (being careful not to have too much) because It used to get sore and a little difficulty swallowing but since the sea kelp I have no issues at all.

Best wishes

A CT scan found 3 thyroid nodules (aka: "goiter") in 2010. I had a fine needle biopsy and it was inconclusive, meaning they didn't know if it was cancerous or not. I've had a CT scan each year since then and this year one nodule has grown. And I'm experiencing choking, coughing, trouble breathing, and a pressure on the right side of my neck. I've been referred to the surgeon 9/22/14 to see about having the nodule(s) removed. I have no idea if he'll suggest part of or all of the thyroid be removed too...I just know I want an end to the pain and symptoms.

I know you're only 16 and it's scary, but it's best to take care of this now before it turns into something worse or more painful. I wish I'd made more demands on my doctor to take care of this sooner. I have 2 friends who had their thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer, and they are absolutely doing great, but its very rare that nodules/goiters are cancerous, and sometimes like mine, the doctors just keep an eye on it annually.

I had a nodule removed from my right breast at 18, and then my right foot at 19, and now I have them in my thyroid...very odd all the right side, but I guess I'm prone to non-cancerous lumps and bumps.

Try not to worry just take care of it and check back in with us!

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't reply to you all, I just wanted to let you all know that I have been to the hospital, they have referred me to a specialist, in 2 months I'm having an ultra sound and some kind of nuclear scan to see what's inside of it and weather it's hot or cold, unfortunately I don't know what that means so I'll have to wait and see, for now I take tablets daily and hope for it to be all okay thank you for your support I greatly appreciate it xxx

Monica,

Commonly, in addition to a blood test, a thyroid scan will also be conducted to evaluate the nodule. In a thyroid scan, you'll receive a small amount of radioactive iodine that is absorbed by your thyroid. An image of the thyroid taken is then taken, and can show a picture of the distribution of the radioactive material in your thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules may some iodine ("warm nodules"), show more activity ("hot" nodules), or take up little iodine and show decreased acitvity ("cold" nodules). Warm and hot nodules are rarely cancerous. Even among cold nodules, only a small percentage are cancerous, but these types of nodules typically require further evaluation.

Hi guys!! I am new to the channel. Just to tell you a little bit about me: I have a goiter (benign/non cancerous, 5.4cm), and I was first recommended for a TOTAL thyroidectomy, and put on a hormone pill for the rest of my life. Well that doctor has not seen me since, and it's been 13 years!! I decided about a month ago to get my levels checked, and just to make sure it wasn't cancerous. Everything is working fine! I was then recommended by an Endocrinologist to get half of it removed. So of course before I proceed with the surgery, I am doing research on it again. And I came across this thread. From what I've researched already, it sounds like it is a 50/50 chance that if I get half of my thyroid removed, that the other side may or may not kick in. Or it's a chance the other side could not kick in, and I can become hypo, and still be on meds for the rest of my life!!! So I wanted to know if there is anyone out there living with half of their thyroid, and how you are doing? Does anyone have a cure besides surgery to reduce the size of my goiter without having surgery?? Thanks in advance.........
