Saliva Adrenal Testing while on Antidepressents

Hi, I am thinking of having this test done privately. My only concern is could the fact I am on Amitriptyline cause the results to be out of line? I am only on a small dose 30 a night. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic anti-depressant, and according to both the lists above it will affect cortisol. I haven't looked up whether it will increase or decrease it.

The STTM link suggests giving up supplements and prescription drugs that affect cortisol unless to do so would be difficult or dangerous. (See the text in red on that page.) I think that becoming depressed without them is a good reason NOT to stop your meds.

I take a low dose of 5-HTP for depression. I know it raises cortisol but I don't know by how much - I don't think the effect is very pronounced. I have not stopped taking it when doing an adrenal saliva test. I just mentally take it into account when I look at the results.

I don't consider any test to be worth getting severely depressed for.

Thank you - I wouldnt stop taking them but I will probably do what you do, and take them into consideration with the result. I have been on them for years, and I have many of the symptoms of adrenal problems which I understand should be looked at before trying NDT. Trying to get me act together it just takes so long, and is so frustrating when you're brain isn't working properly. Thanks for your help. I think I will get the test done.

Is it because doctor thinks you are depressed that he has prescribed Amitriptyline?

No it's for my painful bladder. I try & reduce them but pain just comes back 😟

I can understand why you take them - it's that often GPs prescribe if they think patient is depressed when it's actually that patients have a low FT3 and FT3 would be better suited to have some T3 added.

Any anti-depressant will negate your thyroxine.
