If you look at the Folate bottle, it is actually 400 micrograms or 0.4 milligrams so there is a proper comparison. The other main difference is that folic acid is a synthetic form that many people can't convert effectively to the active form methylfolate (as per the Amazon bottle) in the body.

They are more natural but a much lower dose. You may convert well in which case the folic acid is fine and will raise your levels much faster. I don't think there is a "correct" answer here, maybe it comes down to how low your folate is to begin with - do you know your number?

If your GP prescribed 5mg folic acid then your folate level must be dire, probably under range, so he must think you need the standard treatment for folate deficiency and the Jarrows 400mcg won't be enough at this stage. That's usually used to boost an in range but not optimal level.

Serum foliate level 2ng/ml (5.4-24) think that's it

So there you are. You have a folate deficiency and your GP prescribed 5mg folic acid which is standard from what I have read on the forum.

Here are the NICE guidelines for Folate Deficiency

cks.nice.org.uk/anaemia-b12...

400mcg methylfolate will not treat a folate deficiency, as I mentioned above, you need the 5mg folic acid at this stage.
