Hashis/Thyroid gluten connection
Is it though? I'm trying to be 100% gluten free myself but reading Emily's comment at the foot of Kresser's article makes me realise I have yet to find any evidence at all that a gluten free diet has been shown to help those with thyroid disease. I'd be interested to read of any research that has been done with non coeliac patients.
I think it helps because of the inflammation that gluten causes. Inflammation is the catalyst for auto immune conditions. You can find a plethora of info on the subject in Dr William Davis' book Wheat Belly. And this gluten-thyroid anatomical structure makes sense.
Hi yes I've read that book. Also the David Perlmutter books. My point was really about the evidence for a gluten/thyroid. connection . I've seen no peer reviewed research that demonstrates this.
Scientific research is expensive and is funded by Big Business or Big Pharma - hence there is so little on gluten. No return on investment. Also we have to be wary of Peer Reviews - are they connected to the people funding the research ?
Take a look at Dr Malcolm Kendricks website and his book Doctoring Data
I am not a Coeliac but have benefited from going gluten free . On reading Dr Datis Kharrazians Book - Why Isn't My Brain Working - I decided to be more serious about gluten. It can penetrate the blood/brain barrier and create inflammation - as mentioned in the book.
I have no research to offer you, but way back in the 1980s a friend of mine who had gone gluten free, suggested that I should, too. Never would I do such a thing, I thought. That's only for weirdos, but eventually, when the intense headaches wouldn't go away, I caved in and went GF. What a difference that made. All those terrible headaches went away and I've been virtually free ever since. Hope that helps.
Thank you Gramijee. I really appreciate that. I stopped eating gluten years ago because it always had an incredibly soporific effect on me. I haven't managed 100% though I've tried. It's just when other people cook for me I find it hard to reject their food - even though I always alert people. I will continue to avoid gluten because i just feel much better without it. It's the 'all or nothing' bit that I find so difficult and it's that which led me to try and hunt down where this gluten link came from.
Thanks Marz. I too feel much better without gluten. And I'm familiar (and in love) with M Kendrick and also read D Kharrazian's book. I'm just interested to know if there are any studies out there cos I haven't come across them. I will continue gluten free nevertheless.
Dr Alessi Fasano - the world renowned researcher was asked at a conference about the connection between Hashi's and 'leaky gut' - see my posting link below and watch from about 45 mins. Edited, that should be 52 mins! Sorry!
It doesn't answer your question on whether a study has been carried out, but in the Q&A session he says, of autoimmune diseases there is a strong correlation between Hasimoto's and leaky gut, often resultant of gluten (though he suggests it's all grains) sensitivity.

Thank you Solstices. I'll take a look.
