Hi. Sorry, just a few queries that you marvellous folk on here will prob be able to answer! 😊 ok... ive been prescribed 50mcg of levo for past 7 ish yrs, b4 xmas, after feeling totally rubbish all of the time and after taking advice from various people, i doubled my dose. Tbh, i think its made a difference. Do feel more "with it", better heart rate, depression lifted somewhat. Still cold, and the worst bit..ive put another half a stone on since sept. Doesnt matter what i do, im just gaining. Ive bought a thermometre to test my temp in a morn. (What should i be?..im 34.2Β°c at mo.(i no its not 1st thing- just trying it out!) Also got selenium. How much should i take? Just had my bloods done today so will see what i am. ( "in range" no doubt!!!)πŸ™„

Katylou,

Dose adjustments are usually in 25mcg increments every 6-8 weeks as required. I would wait for your results before making any adjustment. Post them with the ranges in a new question and members will interpret and advise.

Try 200mcg selenium.

Normal temperature is 37 degrees or 98.6 but can fluctuate 10% either way.

I don't know how you've survived for seven years on a starting dose of levothyroxine i.e. 50mcg which should be increased until you feel well. Obviously your doctor only relied on the 'normal' range to keep you unwell.

Did you have the very earliest appointment for blood test and fast (you can drink water). Did you leave about 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the test?

Get the print-out with the ranges and post for comments.

I don't understand how they can get away with undertreating patients.

Thanks shaws. Yes i had an 8.30 am appt, left a good 24 hrs between tablets and ate nothing. As i was always "in range" the doc was quite happy leaving me to stay crappy!! Cant tell you how many times i went to the docs and always just felt like i was winge-ing and whining. Results later this wk..so we will see whether doc will let me stay on 100mcg like ive requested...

"In range" we shouldn't be. Its either towards the upper part of the range for T4 and T4 and 1 or lower for the TSH. Pity no-one appears to have told them that.

It will be interesting to know what your results are.

You have to be (I believe the modern word is) pro-active :)

Don't worry too much about weight gain yet, as hormones are increased and it might well reduce. We have to have sufficient hormones to raise our metabolism, not just get us into a normal range. i.e. TSH should be 1 or lower. and FT4 and FT3 towards the upper part of the range but they appear not to know this.

Thanku so much for all your advice. Ill let you know what my results are later this week. Thanku again. Xx

We are more likely to improve ourselves if we go by our instinct. If we did take too much, we might feel hyper but miss next day's dose and take lower dose the following day.

Cheers mate!!!

Does it work if on the correct dose do you begin to loose weight or even feel 'normal' again?

shawsAdministratorβ€’ in reply toangeldebs

I feel normal and unexplained weight gain is a clinical symptom. I was fortunate not to have weight gain.

Some members have said that their weight has begun to drop.

Some doctors keep us 'in range' and it might be that to lose weight we need TSH to be low. I am not medically qualified so don't take my comment as gospel. Also if people try to diet/exercise before being on optimum is a waste of time as they reduce the important T3 needed in their cells. When we are on an optimum if we have to diet it is then possible for quite a few people. Sometimes it is hard going. :)

Hi angeldebs. Thats exactly how im feeling. Ive literally done every diet going..my friends always loose pounds and stones. Me? Ive put 2 and a half stone on! Itd be funny if it wasnt so upsetting. Im quite happy to not go out anywhere, because i never feel like i look ok. And i cant remember the last time i bought myself new clothes..whats the point? My doctor mustve been really fed up of me complaining about my weight during the summer coz he gave me diet pills! I read the side effects and never opened a packet! Terrifying!! So..now ive started on selenium and i hope and pray that 1 day ill wake up 2 and a half stone lighter...πŸ€”
