Since my doctor isn't being very helpfull ive decided to take things in to my own hands.... Im looking in to how to help my self. Ive found info on Sea kelp and Selenium but don't know what to do.
Do any of you take sea Kelp or Selenium??? - Thyroid UK
Do any of you take sea Kelp or Selenium???
I do take them but only after clearing with my GP. I wanted to take Iodine also but was told no no no. So rather than take Kelp as a supplement/tablet, I actually eat Seaweed instead. I add it to soups, to salads etc. I get them from The Japan Centre in Regent Street as I live in London or from any of the Chinese Supermarket. I .get them dried, soak them for about 20-30 minutes and then use it. It does have a fishy smell but I am used to that now.But it is always best to ask the GP as they are OK for me but they may not be OK for you. Good luck
Selenium you can overdose your body by taken this it is one you need testing for . if you are been treated with thyroid tablets and your tsh is low you can eat foods that have kelp . Why do you want to take these.
My doc says my thyroid levels are fine... but im still putting on weight have difficulty in losing weight have no energy Im being treated with 125 of levo
can you put up your results

Hi emzpow10,
Was in the same position for four years. Bloods normal etc. Got so fed up of feeling rubbish, weight joint pain etc asked to see endo. Asked for Armour which was refused but given T3. Reduced T4 from 125 to 100 and added 10mcg T3 split into two doses a.m. And p.m. First couple of days I actually quartered the T3 tablet which is approx 5mcg before moving to 10 mcg of T3. Started to feel better weight stabilised and could exercise. 12 weeks later saw endo. Felt so much better she agreed to reduce T4 to 75mcg and increase T3 to 20 mcg split into two doses. Bloods still not in the "normal range" but I am! Walk at least 3 miles a day. Lost 12 kg gentle dieting. In fact feel like I did before thyroidectomy. Best of luck. Hope this helps and you get well soon.
Selenium is best taken naturally- as in brazil nuts- but 2 a day is plenty and get a blood test.
400mcg is the max daily safe dose [NB:under half a milligram]
This route also apparently assists in Iodine uptake in a safer way.
It's not recommended to take Iodine with Thyroid meds though, as they will intefere with treatment.
If advised by a savvy naturapathic practitioner it may be OK to mix these, but on your own- dodgy!
I used to take Kelp with Drs knowledge but stopped once starting on Levo. Nothing was said about it at the time, though!
It pays to take an interest in our own health with NHS under so much pressure.
TBH: If you're not getting heard, a second opinion or an Endo would be better than experimenting, as you have been diagnosed - just make your wishes clear and polite [if necessary in writing].
PS:I've just seen your posted results and pleased to see they are doing FT3- that's a BIG plus.
With TSH that low it would appear you are still low FT3 - so the Endo is probably a good bet!
Hopefully, others can comment in detail on your progress to date.
I have taken 400mcgs of selenium since my endo recommend it a couple of years ago. However advised me not to take kelp.
So would any of you recomend taking any supplements?
Do the above posts re selenium and iodine relate to individuals suffering from hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism or both?? This can be confusing. I take 50 mcg Oroxine daily and have been for the last 8 years. My TSH was 3.2 when last tested in June this year which the GP doctor said was 'good' and 'normal' (euthyroid). I understand from my doctor that Oroxine (thyroxine) has quite a high iodine content.
I'm interested in the fact that higher TSH levels seem to be accepted as euthyroid in Australia than in the UK.
My TSH levels have varied a lot over the past few years:
25/10/2011 2.54 (range 0.5-5.5 mU/L) I was told by the doctor "to aim for 2".
01/08/2012 4.94 (range 0.5-5.5 mU/L) Free T 15 (range 11.0-21.0 pmol/L) TPO Ab 6.7 (IU/mL range <34) TG Ab 48.8 IU/mL range <115)
Over the past few years my white cell count and neutrophils have declined to 3.5 (white cell count range 4.0-11.0) and 1.3 (neutrophil range 2.0-7.5) when tested 01/08/2012. "Slight neutropenia".
Not sure if there is a connection between autoimmune Hasmimotos/hypothyroidism and neutropenia? Could this be the case? Over the years the GP's have said not to worry as the reading is much the same everytime I have a blood test? I'm booked to see a hematologist at the end of the month to try to find out what is going on. Any ideas about what to ask him?
