I am hoping someone can advise me, I have UAT and my hair is falling out at an alarming rate, I used to have hair so thick I had to get it thinned out at the hairdressers, "Biotin" was mentioned to me, has anyone had good results from taking this? Thankyou in advance folks! :)

I have hashis and suffer terribly with hair loss.... I've paid good money and seen a trichologist and I use his supplements 'protein jelly' - if you google it you should find it easily enough...

However.....

The best thing for me is selenium! It's AMAZING! I stopped taking it in the December and my next hair cycle which started February was absolutely shocking again! Then once I commenced it again the difference was unreal!

Everyone's hair cycles vary between 2-4 months! And the hair cycle you are currently in is already pre determined by your body the one before so if you do start taking selenium you will only notice the different in your next cycle! Hope that's not too confusing!?

Would you be kind enough to tell me how much selenium you take? Thanks.

Sorry I don't take it, you will have to ask "KarenjT"

Hi,

I take 200mcg daily!

Wouldn't ever be without it!

Gosh I'd forgotten I used to get my hair thinned out when I was young! I went from being hyper (Graves) to being hypo during my treatment and it wasn't until my thyroid was on an even keel that my hair stopped falling out. It drove me mad, it was the straw that broke this camel's back.

In the end I think getting my thyroid to my optimal place was the main thing that helped for me. I also use Plantur shampoo, conditioner and a lotion they make for inbetween shampooing. Using that has helped because I'm definitely not getting the same amount of hair in the plughole or even worse having to shake my hands to shake all the hair off.

At one point any time imentioned it the doctors and nurses used to say I had such lovely thick hair - that drove me round the bend because I knew that when it was wet it was the thickness of a pencil and not thegreat thick chunk it used to be in the past. I got to the point where I used to keep each little pile of hair in a little bank money bag and I used to photograph the hair from the plughole, the idea was that the next person who told me that my hair was lovely and thick would get all my little bags of hair. Fortunately things calmed down and I deleted my collection of photos and put the hair in the bin. It did really upset me though.

Anyway, now I try to eat the sort of foods that boost my hair and nail growth - Google and you'all find lists of what to eat. I also use the Plantur shampoo and handle my hair as little as possible and that seems to be working. I've been able to grow it quite long so I can pin it up and that definitely helps.

You could post any test results you have along with their lab ranges and have you had your ferritin, folates, vitamin D and B12 checked out? You need them to be at the top of their ranges to help your thyroid work.

In addition to all the normal supplements - selenium, mixed Bs, B12, D etc - I found a big change in my hair thickness and texture after I added in 1 tablet (22mg) a day of Solgar Chelated Zinc.

Hope you find some improvement soon xx

Get a Thyroid supplement mix on Amazon- Selenium, B vits, Iodine,Magnesium, Zinc, ect all in one then add Evening Primrose oil max strength as well as a Hair Skin and Nail supplement it really helps!! I know it is a lot but worth it… Make sure you have vitamin D as well as the Thyroid supps do not contain it I was shocked when my bloods came back shockingly low on vit D as I was popping so many pills… Then my Endo checked the bottle and said no vit D in there even though it was an all in one Thyroid Complex. Eat healthy fats I now have avocado and eggs for breakfast and of course lots of fruit and vegs xx

Good luck!

PS my teen daughter also went through hair loss after being diagnosed and she is now back to very thick hair again

Which one in particular did you buy if you don't mind me asking?

I have just looked on Amazon.co.uk and there are so many listed, some have iodine in them which we are supposed not to take.

I am stuck like you Ellie-Louise, I couldn't find one with all the vits "So-Ken 2" advised me to get! :)

I'm sorry Josepie, it was So-Ken2 I thought I was asking the question of. :)

Has your ferritin been checked? Apparently it needs to be over 70 to grow a new hair. Agree with others here about other supplements as well.

josepie profile image
josepie in reply toJosiesmum

I have never had Ferritin checked, my doc will only test my TSH and thats it :)

Definitely needs testing, along with iron, vit D, folate, B12.

josepie in reply toJosiesmum

I would love all of those tests, my Doctor on the other hand will only test my TSH and thats it! :(

You could try another GP! Or you could make the request in writing and say that these are the tests recommended by Thyroid UK as these are commonly deficiencies. Good to have a paper trail I find.

Get another GP Josepie, he hasn't done his homework and he isn't interested in the subject (of thyroid). Many of us, particularly on this site, have changed GPs and Endos a number of times before we find an OK one - and very occasionally a good one. I am on my 4th, he's not perfect, just OK. Sometimes you have to travel a long way to get a good doc. I travel 400 miles round trip, but I only have to do that about once a year.

Josepie nothing is a substitute for adequate thyroid hormone supplementation. I looked through your old posts and I don't think you have shared your test results with us?

josepie profile image
josepie in reply toRuthi

I don't have my new results yet ,thing is I stopped taking the Levothyroxine altogether! I slowly reduced myself down from 150mg to nothing, I only started to take 25mg 5 days ago. I had a blood test yesterday, I have to start again, I would happily not take the Levo at all, I got a bit scared though with people telling me its dangerous to not be taking it! :)

Ruthi profile image
Ruthi in reply tojosepie

Well that's your answer then. Hair loss is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Forget the supplements, just take your levo.

josepie profile image
josepie in reply toRuthi

I should have also said that my hair was falling out massively when I was taking 150mg of Levo, its no worse or better from not taking the Levo! :)

Ruthi profile image
Ruthi in reply tojosepie

I have just looked through your old posts. It looks as if you have never been adequately replaced - if your doctor only tests TSH he will never know what your real thyroid status is. But your symptoms point to hypo. I can see the levo doesn't agree with you, but there are other medications. Have you had all the other things tested? Ferritin, folate, B12 vitamin D?

josepie profile image
josepie in reply toRuthi

Doctor refuses to do any other tests at all other than TSH. Where I live there are only 2 doctors surgeries, the other one to mine cannot take anymore patients and if I go further away I am them out of the catchment area, so I am unable to even cgange my doctor, she will nit even refer me for a 2nd opinion!

Ruthi profile image
Ruthi in reply tojosepie

Well, there are always private tests from Blue Horizon.

What is your TSH?

KarenJT profile image
KarenJT in reply tojosepie

Your current hair cycle is pre determined so it won't stop over night. U will only see a difference once your next cycle starts....

The levo will help! And iron and selenium!
