ChrissyS1,

Write to your GP or Practice Manager and ask what the lab ref range is for your iron result. It's impossible to interpret results without ranges.

VitD 84 is in the replete range 75-200. Most patients are comfortable around 100. There is insufficient ultraviolet light Oct-April to stimulate natural vitD so I would supplement 2,500iu daily until April to maintain levels.

ChrissyS1 You also need to know what they mean by 'iron'. There is an iron panel which involves 4 tests which are Iron, TIBC, Transferrin and Ferritin, and there is just Ferritin which is one of the tests we always recommend when testing vitamins and minerals.

If what has been tested is Ferritin then yours is low and you'd need to supplement, it needs to be a minimum of 70 for thyroid hormone to work, best is half way through it's range.

Yes the receptionist said ferritin yet the GP still has said no supplements. Thanks again for your help the support and advice I've received from you and others on this forum is amazing..

ChrissyS1 OK, so the range for ferritin is usually something like 15-150 or 30-200 or something similar. Your GP will have said no supplements because you probably fall within the range their lab uses, but it is still too low. They only go by 'in range' they don't seem to understand that optimal levels are necessary, so don't expect anything of any use to come out of your GP's mouth regarding nutrition and supplements.

If your GP wont do anything then you can supplement yourself. There are a couple of options.

1) Get some Ferrous Fumarate from Amazon and take 1 tablet twice a day with water. Take each tablet with 1000mg Vitamin C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation. Finish the packet (usually 84 tablets) and retest. It is important ferritin doesn't go too high, too much is as bad as too little. If your GP wont retest there are home fingerprick tests available which members can point you in the direction of. Take iron supplement 4 hours away from thyroid meds and any other medication or supplements as it will affect their absorption.

2) If Ferrous Fumarate causes problems (constipation, tummy upset) then you can get Iron Bisglycinate which is much more gentle but it contains less elemental iron. Solgar Gentle Iron is one brand, there are others. Again, take with Vit C and follow the other points above.
