Ganoderma lucidum - can u take it with thyroid condition?

I have been taking this mushroom extract fit it's antioxidant and other health properties. However I have recently read on the internet that you should not take it if you have an autoimmune disease which is how my under active thyroid has been classified - anyone know anything about this?

Montheone,

Welcome to our forum.

I recall there was post on this not long ago but can't locate it.

My research says most studies have been completed on animals and although requires further confirmation on dosage and production, it has positive results enhancing the immune system. However this may be counterproductive if you have Hashimotos.

In auto immune disease the immune systems activity is raised as antibodies attack the body's own cells. This activity needs to be calmed in order that the attack may be reduced//eliminated, so reducing the accompanying inflammation (aches, pains, hives, food intolerances, etc).

There are many other antioxidants known to enhance thyroid health and work better with auto immune disease ... look at Vit C, Vit E, NAC, Alpha-Lipoid Acid (ALA), CoQ10, etc....

Thanks radd I have been taking ganoderma for a while now and have not had the positive results others talk about - so will stop taking it for 2 weeks and see what happens - I also take juice plus, vitamin c and supplements for osteo arthritis so may be overdoing it ! Let me know if you hear anything else about ganoderma and auto immune diseases. I assume the fact that I take thyroxin doesn't alter the auto immune nature of the disease and the ability of ganoderma to affect it?

Montheone,

Yes, it has been shown that medicating optimal thyroid hormone replacement and lowering TSH enough to suppress thyroid activity, will help suppress further Hashi attacks. Also, as long as a healthy life style is maintained, once the gland is totally defunct, the chances of a Hashi attack must significantly reduce.

However, my gland is like an old shovelled dried pea and I still wouldn't chance anything shown to increase activity as it only takes one weeny living thyroid cell to initiate an attack. Also, there may have been seemingly unrelated other intolerances, originally caused by the low thyroid hormone and now improved but making us more susceptible to other flare ups. (ie gut issues, allergies, eczema etc).

If Ganoderma Lucidum hasn't affected you negatively, maybe it is doing you good as only you know how you feel. Sometimes the affects of these supplements can take many months to be seen.

I don't seem to have the positive benefits others who take it report after approx 4 months and funnily enough I have been wondering why it seems impossible to get rid of thrush which I have had more or less consistently for 3 years 🙄( gut issue? ) yes don't want to risk an attack tho my gland must be v shrivelled now too !

I take ganoderma daily too as well as a few others, but Ganoderma is an adaptogen, which means it balances the immune system, IE if the immune system tries to flare up Ganoderma calms it down and vica versa. I have an autoimmune problem too and Ganoderma doesn't effect it, in fact seems to help in my case...

HI, Sorry I know this post is 2 years old but I wanted to ask you how you were getting on with that, I assume this is the same as Reishi ? I have lupus/sjogrens and Im seriously considering taking it on acocunt of the immunomodulating properties. Do you use a power and add it to coffee ?

As you've responded to a post that's two years old, the person may not be on the forum often. What you can do is click on the name and select message and send them a message. That means they will be alerted and should respond, unless they no longer are a member.

Hi thanks this is reassuring as was getting ready to give it up completely . I haven't had positive benefits that I am aware of unless I take the bulletproof collagen with it but may persevere with this a little longer as long as ganoderma is not attacking my thyroid gland as part of my auto immune problem !
