Does anyone get a choking sensation? I've been waking up during the night choking and gasping for breath like something is lodged in my throat it only lasts a few seconds but it's scary at the time.

CCL,

Yes, I used to have the choking feeling before being optimally medicated. I also used to suddenly involuntary gasp for breath during the night which would wake me.

Have you been tested for sleep apnea?

yes, but I thought it was reflux, it would make me sit bolt upright, and I couldn't breath in, so, so scary. I had a sleep study, apparently, no sleep apnea

Hi Caz1stuk

I have had something similar to what you describe in that i will be woken up by it and sit bolt upright, im not entirely sure what is happening when this occurs but it scares me and my partner as i make a sort of gasping noise to add to the drama, i think with me it might be reflux related but its one of those things i have never talked to my GP about. Hope you find some answers.

yes!!! I wake the whole house with the gasping as I try repeatedly to get some air into my lungs, it is very, very scarey. I too think its reflux

It really is scary...it happened to me again a few weeks ago and my other half said you havent done that for a long time. i must say and im sure i shouldnt do this that if i think ive eaten too acidic or fatty a meal that i take a "rennie" before i go to bed so that this doesnt happen!

Chocking was the symptom that made me see a doctor to begin with. The doctors did not think it was related but sent me for an FNA which unfortunately came back with results.

I get this when my thyroid meds are a little too high it appears. This has happened at least 5 times and as you say is very scary. I take ERFA thyroid which is T3/T4 combination similar to Armour thyroid meds. It seems to only need to be slightly high for this choking to happen. The first time I awoke gasping for breath and unfortunately each one took longer for my recovery. My GP decided it was the thyroid meds causing the problem. I had to bear in mind that she entirely disagrees about my need for this medication and so have worked this out for myself. It does appear to cease with the slightly lower dose and I haven't felt hypothyroidal from it.

Best wishes, I hope that this is of help one way or another.

I have found that my thyroid medication caused dysphagia (trouble swallowing). It became very severe and I often felt choking. Since my thyroid problem is so minuscule, my endo has taken me off thyroid and I am much better. I will be followed to insure there are no severe consequences from the withdrawal of medication.

I have been the same for years at night & also of a day, feels like I have something stuck in my throat like a piece of toast or something. Iv had scopes and it is hiatus hernia causing reflux. I'm on tablets which help with acid but still have lump in my throat feeling!

I found that taking a small dose of my NDT AT 5pm improved this. Guess we are all different.

Hi Strangely enough, it is my husband who experiences this, not me, and he does not have thyroid issues. But it seemed to happen when he had too much rich food too late in the evening,, such as a cheese sauce of venison in rich gravy. He does not have a hiatus hernia or any symptoms of acid reflux during the day and it has only happened half a dozen times in all. We now try not to eat too late and not to have rich food in the evening, but it was pretty scary when it happened as he simply could not breathe.
