Choking
Hello Mayvis
Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear you are having problems.
An enlarged thyroid could account for a choking feeling but equally so could a lot of other conditions.
You need to discuss this with your GP and request a thyroid blood test to asertain whether there is a problem or not.
If you post your blood test results when you get them, complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) in a new question, members will comment.
I hope you feel better soon,
Flower
I used to choke regularly but now that I am on 150mcg levothyroxine this is one problem that's disappeared. For me, the choking was definitely a symptom of low thyroid function. X
A esophageal hernia can also cause choking. Best to check with your doctor to make sure everything is ok. Make sure you chew every bite well and drink plenty of fluids with your meals.
Yes it can be. I used to choke when I was on T4 as I couldn't convert T4 to T3 and I found it very hard to swallow food. When you think that the thyroid hormone controls every muscle in the body then it's quite understandable. The muscles of the digestive tract can only work properly if the thyroid hormone is present at the right level in the body. So if they aren't flexible enough, which is what the thyroid hormone does to muscles, then the food cannot be moved down it properly. I hope this helps
Hi Mayvis,
Welcome to this friendly forum, where you can see already members are offering helpful advice. My advice is.... take the knowledge you gain from here, but always pass it by your doctor before acting on it. As already said it could be your thyroid, so a TFT (thyroid function test) should be requested, another point to check are you producing saliva? If not or you are not producing enough it could be a sign of pernicious anaemia a simple intrinsic blood test can identify that, treatment for that is a B 12 injection, pernicious anaemia derives from autoimmune conditions ....i.e.... thyroid condition, wishing you well & sincerely hope you can get your choking sorted take care love Hx
Mayvis, I think what the above respondant means is that Pernicious Anemia IS an autoimmune disease, as is Hashimoto's - an autoimmune form of thyroid disease.
If you are hypothyroid, it can cause all sorts of problems, all over the body. It could cause you to have low stomach acid, in which case you would have difficulty absorbing B12 and therefore be deficient, which isn't the same as having Pernicious Anemia. But being hypothyroid does not cause Pernicious Anemia by itself.
Choking can also be a symptom, as can any throat problem - coughing, sore throat, losing your voice, etc. But they can also be a symptom of many other things. And that's the problem. It's when you have a lot of symptoms that you should think maybe they all come from the same disease. The best thing to do is ask your doctor to check your thyroid - he can also do a blood test for low B12. He can do blood tests for thyroid function, palpate your gland to see if it's swollen, or do an ultrasound.
Take care, grey
Choking can be caused by chronic acid reflux (LPR). But dont let your doctor put you on a PPI, as this stops acid production and you need the acid to digest your food and absorb your medications. You actually need to increase the acid (use ACV or HCl) to make the valve at the top of the stomach stay shut, which keeps the acid in your stomach, and not go up into your throat.
Wi had a horrible choking attack last night, choke allot, can't swallow food very easy. Diagnosed with thyroiditus., or hyper they don't know. I say for me yes, it started about ten years ago, got allot of other symptoms, but I didn't realise what was going on. I have almost lost my voice, idiot doc put me on a new pill. No gonna work for me. Back to my NDT. I get acid reflux too, but it went when I was on NDT, like I said going back on them. But go to the doc might be something else...........

I think mucin may be a part of this if you want to search a little deeper.
Absolutely can be! Do you have a goitre? Have you had surgery? I think we can get scar tissue that causes discomfort and choking sometimes. I have trouble swallowing sometimes and choke which is very unpleasant and I get panicky. Stress too.
