Does anyone have any suggestions or even better solutions to losing weight. I am about a stone or two dress sizes bigger than the size 10 I used to be and I am determined to do whatever it takes to lose these pounds!!!

I was on Acti-diet a low calorie diet, if you are on Facebook type acti-diet in the search bar and you should find a group you can join

You hypothyroid and you've been on Levo for a month. Unfortunately you need to be patient. You need to give Levo time to work, you won't be getting the full effects yet, it takes about 6 weeks for that. You also need to get to your optimal dose and that can only be achieved by retesting after 6 weeks, increasing dose, retesting again after another 6 weeks, increasing dose, etc., until your symptoms subside and your TSH is low enough for your free Ts to be in their upper part of their ranges.

You also need to have optimal vitamins and minerals so that the Levo can do it's job properly. It can take months for you to start feeling the benefit.

How are your Vit D, B12, ferritin and folate?

Dieting isn't worth bothering with until you are optimally medicated, and then the weight may start to come off naturally anyway. Also, exercise depletes T3 so don't bother with hard exercise in an attempt to lose weight. Just give it time.

Totally agree with Susie. All attempts to rush the weight loss will probably back fire and make you put on even more. The only way to lose the weight you have put on through being hypo, is to raise your levels of T3. And that won't happen in a hurry. It has very little to do with what you eat.

Thanks your take on this is very welcome and I will take heed. I hadn't realised about exercise potentially making things worse or about the time scales involved.

SeasideSusie has made wise comments. Weight gain is a clinical symptom of hypothyroidism due to the fact that lack of hormones make our metabolism too slow, thus weight gain. Optimum hormones may mean no need to diet as weight can reduce. Of course, it might need the addition of T3 to your T4 - if you can find someone to prescribe or supply your own.

Some people have complained (quite rightly as they have reduced their calorie intake) that despite taking something like 1,000 they have 'gained' weight.

Thank you for this, your very soothing words have made feel more patient and actually less to blame. Thank you

You're certainly not to blame, no! Although doctors like to make you feel you are.
