Hypothyroidism and wheat bran

With hypothyroidism goes constipation. I have relieved this with "Allbran" and prunes but I am learning that bran is not a good idea if one's hypo. What is the problem with bran and are there any research papers on the subject?

A lot of hypos turn out to be gluten sensitive. My friend remained constip. until she added some ndt to her levo. Then it went. Are you on levo only?

Have only recently started T4/T3 but have continued my usual breakfasts out of habit. Bit scared to leave them off. I'll have to trial it. Thanks Aspmama

I sorted out my constipation using magnesium citrate, it's literally the only that has worked and I've tried lots as I have IBS!

I use the 'solgar' brand. Not sure whether it's helped with sleep but for my stomach I just wont be without it as it was so miserable having the bloating and constipation.

Have ordered a jar. Do you take one or two tablets per day?

Just as a side note, my Mum started supplementing with it (she isn't hypo) and she reckons that her joints haven't been as stiff in a morning so it could help in more than one area!

Magnesium citrate keeps me awake! I know, I just have to be awkward, sigh.... I take mag glycinate, which gives me the benefits of mag, but doesn't affect digestion.

I keep regular with psyllium husk, which is the active ingredient in fybogel. But fybogel is full of artifical flavour and sweeteners, so I just buy the husk by itself from ebay. Mix with orange juice or just tough it out and drink down (quickly before it swells up) with water.

Plus occasional senna and/or glycerin suppositories. Nothing is worse than being bunged up!!!

My Dad breakfasted on Allbran all his life so just before last Christmas when I noticed a few hypo symptoms returning (aches and constipation) I also took to the Allbran and I have used it ever since with good effect. Previously I had muesli with 4 or 5 prunes and that worked. When the hypo symptoms refused to go with increase in T4 dose (to 100mcg from 75) I decided to try T3 and I haven't yet dropped the Allbran in favour of the muesli and prunes but when the packet runs out I will. Thanks for your reply.

I drink 2 cups of decaf Earl Grey before eating. This is almost like water. But not quite! I'll try it and see if it works for me. Thanks a lot.
