Blood results!

I was at the doctor and got blood results today. TSH is 46.9 and free T4 is 6.3. Doctor was helpful and listened, although she didn't have a lot of knowledge. To be honest, the website has more info, but at least she listened.

Did she prescribe anything?

Got the blood test about 2 weeks ago, was in today for exact figures for my own records so I can keep an eye on what level is right for me. She'd the prescription for levo written by the time she rung me to say I'd an underactive thyroid, and I'd swear she was doing a happy dance to finally figure out what was causing my problems! The surgery normally starts on a 25mg dose levo, but I'm started on 50mg a couple of weeks ago. Still have a myriad of symptoms, but not feeling quite as bad.

I'm glad to hear she has given you a prescription. How long has she told you to wait before a repeat blood test? I hope it is no longer than about 6 weeks.

Blood tests every 6 weeks till it reaches whatever passes as normal. Also repeated doctor sick lines till I'm well enough to return to work.

Shamicuk,

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before or 2 hours after food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

Most people will find symptoms resolve after their TSH drops to around 1.0 with FT4 in the upper range but symptoms can lag a couple of months behind good biochemistry.
