Hello had overactive thyroid since June 2015. Have gone from having 20mg to 10mg. My periods have gone from 5 days to 2 days. I've spent the pass 3-4 months having coughs and colds. Gp keeps saying its a virus. Sends me for blood count tests and they are always fine. I'm quite concerned about my immune system

Sjhuburn75, if your white blood cell count is in range your immune system is fine. Coughs and colds during the winter months are very common. You could take 1-2,000mg vitamin C daily to boost your immune system.

Hello sjhuburn,

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear that you are not feeling well.

Post any recent thyroid hormone blood test results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment.

Low//high thyroid hormone can compromise adrenal and general health.

If you have in range blood count results, have you had iron & nutrients rested ?

I was told by my specialist that carbimozle has specific parameters that suppress you immune system. If you had hyperthyroidism for a while before diagnoses, then you are likely to be run down. It's like your body 8s doing a marathon when you are resting. It may take time to regain your strength. Be aware that Excercise can lower your immune system, so maybe look at tao chi, soft yoga, and l really recommend meditation (studies show that meditation strengthens the immune system significantly). In the early days be a little gentle with yourself. It takes time to recover your strength, look at the opportunity it gives you to explore other outlets for your creativity.

I have been on carbimazole fir over ten years, mentally and physically very well. But l self monitor my body and mind and adjust my rest/Excercise period accordingly.

Good luck x

Yes I was told during my 1St hyperthyroid treatment it was normal to get things like absesses and styes (I had never had them before in 26 years!) due to being run down, funnily I mever had them since either! But this time around I was hospitalised with a bacterial infection that had me extremely dehydrated, I felt sicker from it than is usually normal for me, so yes I reckon the being run down part fits, I would put it not only to the hyper period but then to the reduction of hormone too, my 1St time around on carb it slowly felt like I was coming out of a fog or 'coming down', but if you go low on the carb you are then so slowed that you can have a similiar 'run down' effect,

At least that was my own experience but then I went heavily low trying to get an appointment with the hosi, had to change hosi's to get one and my doc started me on levo based on a book he read infront of me to start me off. So perhaps I was an isolated case for going extremely hypo!!

Once your thyroid starts playing nice you should hopefully go back to how you were before when it comes to infections etc. Hope you feel better soon xxxx
