I have been asked to put info about this petition on HU. I have come across people before who cannot take NDT for reasons such as being a vegan or vegetarian or for religious purposes and this, it seems is another barrier.

If you feel the same way, think about signing the petition - chn.ge/23ZljTh

Hi,

my name is Simon and I’m one of the authors to the petition: ”We Want Organic NDT”, which now has over 500 supporters.

1. Thanks for your reply!

2. We know that it can be difficult to get NDT. We think that an organic option could make it easier to get NDT, not more difficult, since it could be considered as a ”cleaner” and ”better” option.

3. We think its important that we who have a problem with our thyroid stand together and support each other. Please don’t talk badly about this petition. Please sign the petition, and share it.

All the best!

A natural thyroid supplement which is made from the thyroids of British pigs reared without growth hormones, antibiotics or pesticides, made with organic rice flour and a gelatine capsule, already exists. It is easily found on the internet. But the T4/T3 etc content in it is not measured or published, (as it is sold as a supplement, not a medicine) so it is not for everyone.

I see the originator of this petition is in Sweden. I wonder whether Swedish doctors are happy to prescribe NDT to their thyroid patients (unlike UK doctors).

The petition originator says he's concerned about exposing himself to 'unnecessary antibiotics and/or hormones'. But I have to wonder how much this really is relevant. By the time the desiccated thyroid has been made into the pills we receive in the bottle, the processing might have 'killed off' any nasties?

That said, if NDT manufacturers think the 'organic' word can be used as a marketing tool to sell more of their brand, then they'll probably do what they can to achieve it. And maybe even increase the price too!

Very hard to get NDT in any Scandinavian country at the moment. I think the idea is from Norway as they demanded it last year.

I have the impression that patient associations of Norway and Sweden are working together to change things. In Norway combination therapy is somewhat approved. People that have hashimoto even get support from government. They help you to get back on your feet and you get supported to work part time. They seem to be a bit more aware that in some cases of hashimoto one might lose their ability to work and it is fine. You will be tested and go through a certain procedure where they evaluate the seriousness of your condition.

Interesting, thanks.

I'm sorry, but what a load of tosh!

This is a tiny amount of the animal, and whether its organic or not will make little difference to the patient. Quite honestly there are far more important things to be petitioning about, like testing free T3 routinely, and having sensible reference ranges rather than statistical constructs that have nothing to do with health.

It got my goat from the start 'most patients don't get on well with synthetic medication'. No, really? Most people get on fine. Most people on this board don't, of course, but the general figure is 10%. Lets not confuse the reality of the majority who have no real problems.

Agree with you, Ruthi. I didn't get on with NDT! Made me very ill, but I doubt that was because it was non-organic. I do very well on synthetic T3.

2. Actually the petition starts with: "Many patients..." not "Most patients..." Isn't that a little difference? :) Could not "Many patients..." be your 10%? :)

3. Please note that you can make your own petition of what you think is important. We will then try to support that.

Organic certification costs a fortune - it seems that it would just put another barrier in the way of getting NDT at all. For veggies, the answer surely would be T4 and T3 combo. I can understand wanting the animals to have a good quality of whatever life they have - but energy might be better spent on campaigning against GMOs, and factory farming of animals. Naturally raised/grass-fed/free range or whatever might be the place to start.

We already have lengthy and widespread "discussions" about whether Armour has been reformulated, whether Erfa is as potent, whether there were changes to Nature-Throid a few years ago, ...

Do we really need another front opening up wherein we will get "I use the organic one so that ..."?

We see "WP Thyroid has less filler" - when the difference is probably not the AMOUNT of "filler" but the number of different substances. Maybe that is a good reason to choose it? - but let us be clear.

Also, very odd that Erfa Canada have jumped in as they have. After all, don't we think that Erfa is now made in Spain - but their contribution seems to say it is made from north American pigs. Why send it to Spain for manufacturing?

Crikey, let's try and get "basic" NDT in the mainstream first THEN we can go all out for gold plated organic stuff :0)

There are two Bovine products available ,sourced from NZ and sold in US.

in reply toTreepie

The petitioner specificcally says he wants 'Organic NDT (from pig)'. I believe the bovine products are OTC supplements and don't claim hormone content.

I did not read the petition but noted the religious point .Muslims would not accept pork, but Hindus will not gave beef.

However agree with other comments that this is a side issue.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministrator in reply toTreepie

Keep them both happy with sheep thyroid. After all, wasn't that what was originally used by George Redmayne Murray? (And that leaves lots of pig thyroid for those who don't mind. :-) )

As I have said before, one of the reasons for choosing pig is the lower variability of thyroid hormone concentrations compared to animals which (usually) over-winter outdoors and have just one pregnancy a year. Although technology can help to overcome these variations, it is easier to start with something that doesn't vary so much.

Further, there is nothing clear and simple about Muslims shunning pig thyroid medicine. This is just one link:

What a link! I suppose there is always a way out if you try hard enough. For some strange reason pigs are closer to humans in some ways than other mammals.Like us they are omniverous- used by the mafia to get rid of bodies!

I can't access the petition but it's rubbish if it is actually claiming that non-organic status is a bar to vegetarians and Muslims using porcine NDT.

in reply toClutter

No, the petition does not say that, but it is still a rubbish petition! I was going to copy it here for you, but I can't access it either now, just get a 502 error.

This is what it says :

We Want Organic NDT (from pig)

•27,000,000 people in the US and 200 million worldwide have a Thyroid Disorder.

•80% of all Thyroid Disease cases are diagnosed as Hypothyroidism and 20% Hyperthyroidism.

•Females are 5 times more likely to develop a hypothyroid disease condition over males.

Many patients with Hypothyroidism don't get well on synthetic medication, instead they seem to get better on NDT, Natural Desiccated Thyroid. There is sometime a debate whether NDT is a good option or not, BUT this petition is not about that. This petition is about that We Want Organic NDT (from pig), thus, NDT from organically raised pigs. Many companies (like Actavis (Forest Labs), RLC Labs, Erfa Canada 2012 Inc) produces NDT, but here the pigs have or may have been exposed to antibiotics and/or hormones. We as patients now do not want to be exposed to this.

RLC Labs writes on their webpage:

"Q: Are the pigs organic?

A: No, but we understand the importance of organically raised pigs and hope to have an organic option available in the future."

We now want this hope not only to be a hope but to be action and a reality. Please sign this petition and support this matter. Hypothyroidism is not a fun disease. We also think organically raised pigs is good for the pigs, for the nature and for the whole world as a planet.

I, personally have had problems with my Hypothyroidism for about three years now. This has forced me to be on sick leave, and now I can't complete my studies as a psychologist. I'm 26 years old. Since I don't get better on synthetic medication (I have tried both T4 and T3), I now want to try NDT. But I don't like the fact that I need to expose myself to unnecessary antibiotics and/or hormones. Please sign this petition and support this matter. We think this can make a change!

Thanks!

I think the fact that in 6 days they've only got 14 people to sign this petition speaks volumes about its necessity...
