Snooze, supplement iron until ferritin is >100 to halfway through range, and supplement D3 until vitD is 75-200. If either drop when you stop supplementing you'll need to restore levels and then supplement at a lower maintenance dose continuously.

You can supplement methylcobalamin continuously to maintain B12 around 1,000. 1,000mg vitamin C can be supplemented continuously and if you feel a cold, flu, respiratory or sinus infection coming on up the dose to 3,000mg to boost the immune system until the illness clears. You'll need to reduce dose if 3,000mg causes loose bowels.

Snooze,

Because our bodies are (perhaps) immune compromised and we have to take meds to control metabolism, there is huge scope for things not to work as well as in another person without our issues.

Iron and vitamins should be supplemented according to deficiencies and some people might have to take certain supplements for life.

I would consider taking all my thyroid enhancing sups forever (just in varying doses) as my thyroid function is never going to improve on his own.

It is a pain taking sups but the alternative is worse.

Thank you flower

Ask your gp to test your ferritin level again. Meanwhile, Personally I would not supplement iron while I had a viral or bacterial infection though. The body restricts available iron then, so as not to 'feed' the invader.

You do need to know how high your ferritin is now. Some people find it hard to raise their levels, and that can signal an absorbtion problem. There is no general guide to how long it takes to raise it - it varies from person to person.

Some people seem to need continuous (or nearly) iron supplementation. We regularly see that a "course" of some iron gets the iron levels up - then they simply drop again when the supplementation ends.

It is important not to overdo iron - it can be severely damaging. So the only answer is regular testing.

However a dietary improvement in iron can be a helpful addition. And now that black pudding is a Superfood...

:-)

This Superfood thing is always a commercial thing - so don't take it too seriously. Black pudding can help with iron.

(I like a slice of black pudding, gently fried, with a barely heated through, still soft and runny egg yolk on it. But never knowingly had an iron issues.)

Thanks you've made me laugh with your recipe 😂 Yum . I'm in bed with elec blanket on I just can't seem to get over this flu thing if that's what it is . I'm starting to worry because of this pain so bad yesterday I couldn't sit on sofa with the burning throbbing pain in my back shoulders I am waiting to see a rheumatologist but today I've had so much pain in my hip pelvis area it was making me feel sick . Thankfully it's eased some . My poor son and daughter keep looking at me as if surely this isn't thyroid even tho they r adults . Any advice would be grateful I'm also very pale / yellow tinge . Sorry for the saga 😟

That sounds like one of two things. Liver not working properly so ending up with bilirubin in your blood. Or significant intake of betacarotene (e.g. lots of carrots) causing hypercarotenaemia.

Must get a liver function test.

Hi, can I ask how you are now? You sounded, when you first wrote this, like I am now. Feel like I have flu all the time, constant headache, sore throat, no energy, feel like death to be honest. I'm 61 in June, either hypo or hyper, never at a normal level except when in transition from the one to the other. If I'm tested during that transition period, my endo says" oh great, you are ok now" when clearly I'm not. Its a nightmare. I'm on Levothyroxin at the moment but it will probably be Carbimazole soon, because as often happens, I'm taking one when I should be on the other. :(

Not what you're looking for?
