Hair loss! Hair growth!
Hiya
My hair loss stopped when I has been on b12 & iron for 6 weeks so I can't figure out which one worked its magic. I resisted the urge to use products as I am so sensitive to chemicals these days.
healthline.com/health/vitam...
Vitamins A (careful, too much is toxic, plus can cause hair LOSS), D, E, K, C, and the B-complex group: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, and folate.
There's also Iron and Zinc
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and Horsetail Extract (natural source of silica) are also good and are found in a lot of hair/skin/nails supplements.
Hair needs keratin and Collagen, which both need amino acids - keratin production requires cysteine, lysine, arginine and methionine, while collagen production also requires methionine, plus glycine and proline.
You can also check out Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed Oil and Inositol if you think the hair loss is tied to DHT.
That is an interesting reply but could you translate into a practical food intake or supplement regime?
I continue to suffer diffuse hair loss despite taking iron for years, ferritin still only 32. Luckily for me an endo checked ferritin and when I began the iron treatment, ferritin only 11 and my hair loss stopped and hair recovered. This last year hair loss has once again been rapid and diffuse, no idea why apart from low ferritin. Despite very healthy eating cannot get it higher.
So, if your ferritin is low again, are you treating it again? And how are your thyroid levels - T4, T3?
Hi, thanks for reply. I continue to take 1 x 305mg ferrous fumerate daily. I take this morning and levo evening to avoid probs asbsorbtion. Recent tests for t4 and t3 in the middle range so no action. Taking 75mg levo daily.
If your FT3 is in the middle of the range, it's probably too low for you. Most people need it up the top of the range to get rid of symptoms. So, that could be causing your hair loss.
Thanks for advice, no idea how that works with GP who accepts it, I will have to go back to her and ask to look at them again. They do not want to prescribe T3. On the other hand, not sure how they can accept someone losing so much hair!
Sadly, most of them don't bother. They look at the TSH and if it's within range, you are fine lol
Ok, this is what I did to make Rumatoligist pay attention. I took pic of belly after eating. She looked shocked and wants me to continue on quest with stomach doc. Then I pulled out about 10 snack ziplock bags, each full of hair. I explained that I lost that much hair every time I showered. It finally sunk in and she changed my Tbyroud meds.
You could always buy your own T3 and self-treat. Let's face it, you couldn't do worse than your doctor is doing!
You are right there... thanks for comments everyone. Will keep you posted.
hi greygoose. just reading on here and trying to educate and arm myself for when i go back to my docs this week... where can i get T3, i know this is a dodgy area... my doc and my endo wont test for T3.. am going back to insist, and to get my print out of blood results. thankyou
Very interesting mini films, great charity and fantastic doctor:

and Inside Out documentary

One of them has an interview with a lady whose hair regrew after B12 treatment (absorption difficulty as most people have plenty in their diet) Of course there are many other reasons why and these links might be helpful too? Good luck!

I am sorry to say that Dr Chandy has now lost his Licence to be a doctor, being hounded because he didn't follow the guidelines re B12. It's another scandal of a doctor who made people well.

What appalling treatment of a very caring and knowledgeable man who puts patients before profits. B12d treatment is very cheap therefore big companies would rather push more expensive medication no matter whether or not it is the wrong type or whether or not it will do more harm than good . . .
I agree.
It appears to be the method today - that if doctors who have been trained in a particular way (or have taken a special interest in a particular vitamin/mineral/hormone) that they are hounded and licences withdrawn, so that all other practitioners are forced to toe the line or might lose their livelihood. Dr Peatfield was one who resigned rather than have his licence withdrawn and because of the because of the immense strain being called before the GMC. He prescribed Armour (he qualified before synthetic levo was forced onto the public arena as 'perfect' replacement). He is also hypothyroid himself and studied in the USA at the Broda Barnes Foundation. Dr Skinner(virologist) was called before the GMC 7 times (a 10 million to one chance if you'd put a bet down). His licence wasn't withdrawn but the constant harassment took its toll and he died due to a stroke. He only became interested due to the fact:-

other doctors had their licences withdrawn. Dr Myhill is another thorn in the side but still has her licence.
None of the above doctors put their patients in danger yet Dr Shipman went unnoticed.
i am showing my doc this article!
Hi I saw a hair consultant but he said nothing but some products ( expensive) give the illusion of being helpful. It can be low iron etc.

Hi there, an over the counter product which helped me was Viviscal. It can be bought in Holland and Barratt or other health shops. The Viviscal Careline are very helpful too.
It took just under three months, after which time you will see lots of small new hairs all over scalp. It claims to nourish the hair follicles naturally, the main ingredient being marine protein.
The only drawback is that it is an expensive product !!!
But I was desperate at the time !!!!
As another user pointed out, there could be several reasons for hair loss. Being hypo, low ferriton, sex hormone issues, vit deficiency. You are only on a small amount of levo. Chances are you are still hypo.
Oh and I struggled to raise my ferritin for months until I stopped supplementing every day. Couldn't be bothered and was fed up to be honest. Last full iron panel was in May, ferritin dropped from 44 to 40. Well, had another full iron panel done last week and ferritin is 90. Something's not right lol I am just saying that it's another piece of the puzzle.
One article I was read talked about protein.
The article said that muscle protein is inflammatory and I should eat other protein sources like eggs, organ meats, fish, dairy, bone broth, and gelatin
I've had same hair loss isses and am trying to eat more of these
I also had a problem with hair loss, it was very distressing. I used a combination of Nisim Shampoo For Hair Loss, and a supplement from Lambets, called Florisene. I was desperate and I used both together, I don't know which worked, but it did. Now, if my problem came back, I would start both again immediately. Does anyone else have a problem, not with losing hair, but getting hair, where you don't want it, on the face? And if so, have any ideas how to stop it.
Hi everyone - has anyone tried Hair La Vie? Look it up... Mine is on its way from the U.S. and I'll let you know how it works! Thanks for all your insight - so helpful! J
Try Biosil; it's been helping me.
My hair was shedding a lot when I was dx Sept this year. I started taking biotin, b12, iron, evening primrose oil, vit d etc. But I was still shedding.
Over a week ago I tried nioxin no 3. I've used it every day and although I still lose hair in the shower... I can run my fingers through my hair throughout the day and I get the odd loose hair. Before ... I was losing several strands each time. Maybe all the vits etc are doing their job but it's definitely slowed down. Phew!
Try NDT, much better than levo, my hair loss has slowed considerably since I've been on it!
anyone have any updates on success
Hi Plum786 , I've been taking Viviscal after my mother recommended it to me and I've seen a great improvement! I buy mine from Amazon, it's expensive but worth it, my husband even noticed how better my hair looks - no longer like a wet mop and when I mop/brush I don't find half as much hair 👍🏼
i have been thinking about ordering that too ....but how long b4 you saw improvement...i am getting too thin on top now....shocking and embarrasing
wow
