Shaybenholly, I think poor conversion is the only reason T4+T3 is prescribed.

Shaybenholly, I've had a look at your results and your FT3 was good so you don't have a conversion issue. If you felt better on 125mcg I would resume that dose. I suspect you may have had a Hashi flare which can cause palpitations and a lower TSH may dampen Hashi flares. You may be able to further reduce Hashi flares and antibodies by adopting 100% gluten-free diet.

Hi clutter I was slightly hyper on them results a few weeks back an I felt dreadful so I reduced my meds after a week of reducing them I felt OK now I feel ill again will I not go hyper if I up them again my throats really sore again as well feel like I've got a cold I felt like this last time

Shaybenholly, you weren't hyper, your FT4 was mildly over range. Reducing dose to see whether palpitations resolved was sensible and helped for a week but now palpitations have resumed and you are tired, resuming 125mcg may at least help with the fatigue. It is likely the palpitation are due to Hashi's, not 125mcg and the sore throat is often a symptom of a Hashi flare which can cause the thyroid to become tender and swollen.

Clutter is their anything I can do about the palps an how long do flare ups last an can they happen every few week sorry for all the questions the hashi thing is knew to me not long found out

Shaybenholly, there's no telling how long a flare will last or how frequently they'll occur. Most doctors won't even acknowledge that Hashi's causes symptoms. The best thing to try is the gluten-free diet but it will take a few weeks/months to feel benefits.

Palpitations are distressing and uncomfortable but are rarely damaging. They often don't even show up on ECGs. Beta blockers sometimes help but they also reduce T4 to T3 conversion which makes hypo symptoms worse.

Has your ferritin been tested? Low iron/ferritin can cause palpitations.

Shaybenholly, if it was more than 6 months ago it is worth rechecking.

Thanks clutter i had a retest about 3 months ago all too end of range I wouldn't be bothered if I was getting one or 2 palps a day but it's loads When I'm feeling well I try to go the gym because I enjoy it but it wipes me out the next day

Shaybenholly, I do sympathise, I had dreadful palpitations 24/7 with Hashimoto's until I had thyroidectomy, and again when I was switched from T3 to Levothyroxine. I still get them on T4+T3 but less frequently and they're less intensive.

Clutter can I ask why you had you thyroid out an do you have trouble converting hope you don't mind me asking

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply toshaybenholly

Shaybenholly, I had a large nodule removed because it was compressing my trachea. Histopathology found Hurthle cell cancer so I had completion thyroidectomy. Hashi's stopped after thyroidectomy. I didn't do well on Levothyroxine and conversion was poor with FT3 below range. I'm fine on T4+T3. Not only does T3 deliver good FT3, almost more important to me, it calms the adverse effects T4 only causes me.

I'm glad you are feeling better it must of been a scary time does hashi go if your thyroids removed I was wondering about this or does it attack something else

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply toshaybenholly

Shaybenholly, Hashi's goes if ALL of the thyroid tissue is removed. If a lot of remnant tissue is left in the thyroid bed attacks may continue. I had no more Hashi attacks after thyroidectomy and 2 rounds of RAI destroyed any thyroid cells in the body so I have no thyroglobulin or thyroglobulin antibodies.

It's Graves disease which may go on to attack other organs after thyroidectomy or RAI.
