Has iodine raised my tsh?

I have been stated in nascent iodine 4mgs a day as well as 400mcg of selenium and my tsh has risen from 3.0 to 6.05. Of course feeling totally hypo. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I know iodine is a really controversial subject.

One use of iodine is to induce hypothyroidism. They sometimes give it Graves' patients before thyroidectomy to lower thyroid hormone levels before surgery.

Frazzie1, 4mg is a massive dose. The recommended RDA is 150mcg. Levothyroxine + diet should provide you with the iodine you require.

Hello Frazzle,

Iodine is essential for production of thyroid hormones, which exert widespread metabolic effects in your body but many have sufficient levels of iodine for a healthy thyroid function.

Excessive dietary (supplementary) iodine intake can actually reduce T3 and T4 production if you already have sufficient stores of iodine in your body. As your thyroid hormone levels fall, your pituitary produces MORE TSH to stimulate increased production of T3 and T4.

As your thyroid is impaired by iodine excess and will not have normal responses to TSH... your hypothyroid symptoms may become worse.

If you have Hashimotos and are not supplementing selenium ... you may suffer an auto immune attack as well.

Thanks both. I have read much on this topic and realise now how high this dose was. I have a really good diet and didn't think for one moment I was deficient. Thankfully he also put me on 400mcg selenium which has probably averted a massive autoimmune attack. i have learnt a really hard lesson with no idea how long it's going to take to normalise ☹️

Frazzie, I sympathise and don't have any answers for you , but just want to let you know my experience. I am still so confused about iodine... I also have a v.good diet and only did a urine iodine test in case my iodine levels were too high. I was v.surprised to find they were low. So I decided to take nascent iodine. I cant remember where I got the doseage amount from, and I had severe 'brain fog' at the time - but I also took a high dose. First day 3 drops 3 times which was 1.2mg, next day 12mg, next day 12 mg. Only thing I noticed is that my temp went briefly to 37 for the first time in years and my waking temp went to 36.6 instead of less than 36. I cant remember how long I stayed on that dose, probably a week or two. I was on selenium 200mcg for ages before that and ever since, and at some point started on another supplement that had 100mcg of selenium also, so 300mcg a day. Dont know if any of this, or something else is responsible, but my TPO antibodies which have been above range since 2012, and were 207 in March, came back NEGATIVE in September. So, I dont think I had any negative effects from the iodine. Not saying that the iodine reduced the antibodies, I don't know what worked. Just wanted to show the other side of the story. Best of luck.

That is great news Evo1.

It is good to hear a positive side as iodine is so controversial and living in the UK we " shouldn't " be deficient anyway.

I guess the moral of the story is to do as you did ... and test before supplementing iodine.

There is another member who has done really well on iodine too so there is a definite place for it when implementing the correct protocols.

I wish I could get warm ...

Thank you for sharing
