Hi there, this is my first ever post on HealthUnlocked. Actually it is more of a question. Is it true that amalgam tooth fillings don't work well with Throxine and make the effect negligible ???

Hypothyroidism - Amalgam tooth fillings
I wouldn't think they have any effect because if amalgam tooth fillings affected thyroxine then everybody with these fillings would be hypothyroid whether they got the thyroxine from their thyroid gland or from tablets.
There is a lot of controversy about amalgam fillings but I'm not convinced they have much effect if any. Just sticking to your specific question I've never seen any evidence that they affect the production of or action of thyroid hormones.
Hello divagate,
Welcome to our forum.
I am obsessed with mercury atm.
In answer to your question ...... I believe the chance of thyroid antibodies are increased with mercury toxicity so making hypothyroidism more likely.
I have just taking the first step to have ALL my amalgam mercury REMOVED and have had one session out of between 4 -6..... next session is next week ! ! ! ... .
Quoted from link below.........[.....Those with amalgam fillings exceed all occupational exposure allowances of mercury exposure of all European and North American countries. Adults with four or more amalgams run a significant risk from the amalgam, while in children as few as two amalgams will contribute to health problems. ....]......
.. ...... I have a whole mouthful of mercury fillings....
A single dental amalgam filling with a surface area of only 0.4 sq.cm is estimated to release as much as 15 micrograms of mercury per day primarily through mechanical wear and evaporation. Those with more could be absorbing up to 120 micrograms of mercury a day. A "silver" filling is not a true alloy but made up of 50% mercury, 35% silver, 9% tin, 6% copper and a trace of zinc.
Amalgam mercury transfers to human tissues and accumulates with time. It also releases vapour which is lipid soluble and passes readily through cell membranes and across the blood brain barrier. .... yuk..! ! !
I have high TPOAb in spite of keeping ALL nutrient levels optimal and using ALL supplements known to reduce autoimmune responses and aid thyroid hormone conversion. I follow a totally gluten free diet and healthy life style.
I have Heamochromotosis .. (dangerously high iron levels . .! ) and for the past two years have experienced an excessive thirst, an awful taste in my mouth and a change in saliva consistency.
I'm now of the thinking that any metal I can get rid of .... must be a good thing.! !

Londinium: were the teeth perfectly healthy and not requiring any dental fillings before the amalgams were placed? Does the NHS dentist drill holes and put amalgam in teeth that are free of decay? Why do the NHS dentists do this?
I'm assuming you are outraged on your own behalf and you've never had any cavities in your teeth but someone has gone in there and destroyed your dentition for some undefined reason?
I have 3 fillings and my hypothyroidism started when I was pregnant (12 years ago) and first had a cavity.
Just to clarify. There is some evidence that mercury might affect thyroid autoimmunity in patients who are hypersensitive to mercury. I'm not aware of any evidence to suggest mercury or amalgam has an effect on the absorption of, or the action of thyroxine, regardless of whether it comes from the thyroid, from levothyroxine or natural dessicated thyroid.
If someone has Hashimoto's and the autoimmunity is not resolving then they might benefit from removing the amalgam but I'd make sure I'm tested for hypersensitivity before having any dental work.
(Simple comparisons of subjects with amalgam fillings and those without are not much use as the fillings may be a consequence of lifestyle. Also, hypothyroidism leads to dental problems which will cause a correlation with amalgam fillings).
