Can anyone tell me if you can take too much Vit C? I take 1000mcg at night with my Levo and then take another 1000mcg in the morning. Someone on another forum said it may interfere with Calcium levels?
Vit C: Can anyone tell me if you can take too... - Thyroid UK
Vit C
Yes, you can. Google for 'vitamin C toxicity'. This link is from the Mayo Clinic and there are others for you to read.
The question is what do you mean by Vitamin C? If you mean the ASCORBIC ACID that is sold as vitamin C, I believe you can., but it's quite difficult, and you would have to be something of a fanatic! I have heard that it could cause kidney stones. ASCORBIC ACID is NOT Vitamin C, just a small component of it! Why the powers that be allow it to be called this is incomprehensible! If you mean REAL vitamin C as found in fruit and vegetables, then that is virtually impossible! The big proof-----Scurvy---as suffered by sailors in 18th century etc. cannot be cured with ascorbic acid, ONLY with Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables! I am somewhat on a mission at the moment ,to let as many people know about this. I have only just found out, and am truly shocked! In fact I haven't found any source of true vitamin C , except in fruit and veg! Your body needs REAL VITAMIN C ! It is a complex vitamin , consisting of many components, Ascorbic acid being only one part, which is able to be manufactured easily and very cheaply!
EAT MORE FRUIT! I don't think that 2000mcg a day will do you any harm! EAT MORE FRUIT! All the very best to you Sorry about the rant!
True ,but how often do you want to rush to the toilet!
There is no point in eating so much fruit that one would spend extra time on the toilet! The oversupply of Vitamin C would disappear down the loo! I only wanted to say get your Vitamin C from natural sources, which is actually the only way to get it. Overdosing with Ascorbic acid has the same effect as too much fruit.I was also objecting to calling Ascorbic acid vitamin C which it IS NOT! But I think I shouldn't bother! It is so engrained in our vocabulary, I'm wasting my time! People think that I'm a nut-case!
No, you're not a nut case - or if you are, I'm one too! I'm always campagning about this or that, but it's hard to make people listen.
I totally agree with what you say about ascorbic acid - I say the same thing about folic acid compared to folate. But, I would just like to say that eating more fruit, when you're hypo, isn't necessarily going to solve the problem. If you have low stomach acid, you might not be able to benifit from that extra fruit because you can't absorb all the nutrients, and may need supplementation to make up the short-fall.
You can find vit C made with fruit. Rose hips or acerola cherries. More expensive than ascorbic acid, true, but that can't be helped. If you need it, you need it. But you won't get it on the NHS, that's for sure! lol
Gabkad had something to say about vit C on another thread the other day, which you might find interesting :

Goulash, anyone?
I always thought that 1000mcg was the daily limit and you most certainly should not be taking it with your levo. Take all vitamins at least 2 hours away from taking your levo.
I have read here and repeated the advice that vit C AIDS absorption of Levo and can be taken with it.
I'm not sure you should be taking levo at the same time as vitamins? I think 4 hours apart, which is certainly true for iron supplements.
Invest in a good vitamin c with bioflavonoids.
4 hours for iron and calcium. 2 hours for the rest. But taking vit C with Levo helps absorption.
Well I never! I had no idea that vit c was good to take at the same time as levo. Is the same true for T3? Thanks Greygoose.

Hello informaniac,
In my opinion you are dosing correctly.
Take Vit C with bioflavonoids that will ensure it is fully metabolised or something like rosehips. The range of bioflavonoids should be 1:2.
Because Vit C is water soluble and quickly used up, the body is able to tolerate big amounts…especially if stressed or very ill.
In order to find out how much your body requires Dr Wilsons says …...
On day one take 500mg and every HOUR take another 500mg until your bowel movements are loose. Then decrease by 500mg and this will be your daily dose. The most common dosage is about 2000 - 4000 mg for people with adrenal fatigue but he has known people to dose up to 15,000 to 20,000.
I have not tried this method and wouldn’t advocate such large dosing unless under the care of a practitioner.
He also claims that any orange over 2 months old (and many in our shops have been stored for this time.! ! . ). have dissipated amounts of Vit C so unless you can pick your oranges off a tree..!!.. you can not guarantee the content. The bioflavonoids in the fruit is found in the white pithy part
As you increase your take of vit C ….your body adapts to higher levels and utilises it more efficiently. When taking large amounts..always decrease back down slowly.
Dr Peatfield also states in his book you can easily supplement up to 3000mg.
There has been research for several years regarding taking Vit C with Levothyroxine to aid absorption with very successful results. I have been advocating this protocol for sometime and follow it myself, taking both Levo & Vit C first thing in the morning.
I have used Solgar Ester C for many years but am now using Dr Wilsons Adrenal Super Adrenal Stress formula.
There is discounts available on all sups available at The Nutri Centre, Supersupps and Cytoplan for members of ThyroidUK.

(Unfortunately Dr Wilsons supplements are not available through these suppliers but Solgar is.)
Vit C also enhances the absorption of calcium. However this is irrelevant if taking Vit C with Levo because Levo can NOT be taken with calcium.

I personally have found taking liquid Vitamin C WITH my Levo has helped.
I suspect, like many hypothyroid people, I have low stomach acid and adding Vit C (or ascorbic acid) has helped increase stomach acidity, this may be why it is improves the uptake
I also take slow release Vit C in afternoon, just before main meal.
I take my Levo at bedtime - also this for me is much better
Thanks very much everyone, in particular Flower007 ... I feel totally reassured now The vit C I am taking are just from Amazon so when they run out I think I may go for an upgrade!
I'm taking 6000mcg Vit C daily at the moment as I had a bit of a sniff the other week. Usually I take 4000mcg per day. I've never known a problem with taking this much. (The sniff went away.)
I am being stingy compared to you Penny! I started taking it because of Peridontal disease and am just going to continue on with it now as it obviously doesn't cause any harm.
