Diarrhoea : Not a nice subject sorry but has... - Thyroid UK
Diarrhoea
Sandcastle, if you've had it as long as you've been hypo you should ask for a coeliac screen. If it is recent it may be a sign of overmedication.
I've had this problem most of my life, and I think I've been hypo since childhood/puberty. In the last couple of years I have started treating my thyroid and have improved my mineral and vitamin levels. The result has been a major reduction in diarrhoea problems.
Most people who are hypothyroid have constipation. I have no idea why my problem has been the opposite.
My son suffered from over spill due to severe constipation.
I shall make an appointment with Dr and have it checked out. I just get the constipation sorted and then I start with this. Thanks for your help. I'm only on 2 grains of thyroid but maybe I need to reduce. Thanks again
Before reducing NDT have the earliest blood test to make sure you do need a reduction.
I have severe symptoms of Ibs alternating between constipation and diahorrea
My diahorrea depends on what I eat , but if I eat the wrong thing I am ill for days
And only recently diagnosed x
I started diarrhoea the same time as my bladder symptoms in 1998, one doctor said there was a connection. I've had lots of tests that were inconclusive, but the diarrhoea hasn't gone away. It started when I was on no medication at all. It definitely dictates my life. If I need to go out I often have to take codeine. With mine it tends to start around 4 pm.
When it first started I could see food I'd eaten 20 minutes before, I'm not kidding. I can get it like brown water, pints of it, then I can have orange fatty diarrhoea but don't eat much fat. It always has a particular smell, like perming lotion. I've never been able to find a definitive cause, although since being on thyroid meds I get the odd day where I'm OK. Sugar and caffeine can kick it off, or just walking up the stairs
I wish I could help you other than keeping codeine on you at all times. Some case studies I've read by people with hashimotos included diarrhoea.
I have it too. I have had bile acid test, hydrogen breath test, endoscopy, colonoscopy, barium swallow, coeliac test - all negative. So, nobody knows why. If I get up an hour earlier than I ough tto need to, it is usually allover by the time I need to go out. After that I'm fine. Gastro suggested taking some meds or other, but said it took two hours to work, so I'd have to get up even earlier for the same result.
I used to get diarrhoea quite often until I gave up gluten and grains generally and went quite low carb, so I recommend a low carb gluten free diet. I find sugar and starch can upset my digestion not just gluten, hence I suggest the low carb. Probably to do with the balance of good and bad bacteria.
Fellow IBS sufferer been diagnosed sice I was 11 so can imagine how hard it is to have through school etc 22 now and still it's no easier.
I go from one extreme to another and neither are very pleasant unfortunately.
Hoping you feel well
