Seeking NDT, Armour and a private Dr
Danyell, email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org.uk for a member recommended list of private GPs and endos.
Also, if you just want to buy the Armour or any other NDT, just Google "Buy NDT" or "Buy Armour Thyroid". You might have to fill out a form to let your "food and drug" people that you are importing it - but after that you are free and clear. Of course, if your new doc does this it is simpler.
There is no mechanism for letting your "food and drug" people know that you are importing medicines for personal use, at least in the UK.
Googling suffers from a major problem. When people post asking for suppliers, they want trustworthy suppliers. Links from Google tend to include enormous numbers of sites which don't even supply the products but have used the keywords to garner traffic. And at least some will be anything but trustworthy.
Recommendations help to minimise the risks.
Helvella you make two good points:
1) I have had no personal experience importing medications into Britain, I was quoting another post from another British blog-site (Patient UK) where a couple of bloggers were exchanging their experiences buying medications from Canada, US and New Zealand. Maybe if you just go ahead and order it, that "form" comes along with it. If I can find the old post I well post more details.
2) Yes, I agree, you should research the brand that you buy. I personally have to buy some Armour in the very near future and the first thing I will do is telephone or e-mail Forrest Pharmaceuticals (it's manufacturer) with the Google list in front of me and ask which one is their bona fid a distributer. I'm sorry, I should have spelled this out.
During my research on how to buy Armour without a prescription I found a distributer in Redwood City (just up the road, I am in the US). I e-mailed them to see if I could just drop by and buy some Armour over the counter. They told me that they were not able to sell within the US and told me I must import from Canada and fill out the appropriate paper work! Is that ever screwed up!
LAHs,
Interesting repsonse!
In UK law, we all have the right to import most medicines for personal use. This applies to the person doing the importing and members of his/her household. There is absolutely no documentation required. (The limitations occur with controlled drugs - such as morphine.)
If large amounts were ordered, someone (probably HM Revenue and Customs) could raise a question but there is no formal limit.
Sounds as if someone was confused.
I have my doubts that Forest (now part of Irish-owned Actavis) will be at all helpful. Their USA & Puerto Rico distributor list is here:
frx.com/pdf/general/AuthDis...
Quite a number of years ago, Forest stopped distributing Armour Thyroid or even allowing it to be distributed to the UK. Continuing supplies are available because they are supplied at a lower level (think retail rather than wholesale).
We sometimes see UK-based pharmacies selling to people abroad things they cannot sell without a prescription within the UK. Seems to be universal.
